can't go faster than 30mph
My 86 TA cannot go faster than 30mph. the car starts up just fine. i can rev the engine as high as I want with out issues. I can drive the car all day at 25 mph but once i get to 30 -35 mph the rpm shoot up to 3500rpm, the only way to stop it is turn off the car. which then sputters and spits like it is flooded.
then it runs fine.
I have replaced the carb, fuel filter, mass air flow,EGR, cat, dist cap, rotor, plugs, plug cable, still the same.
I was told by someone that the carb it bad and another mechanic told me that the dist is bad.
I don't know who to believe anymore.
it is a 305 l4 carbed engine. if that helps.
has anyone seen this?
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I say carb.
At first glance you would think the tranny is slipping but I bet the throttle is not closing all the way on the carb.

When the transmission went out in my car, I could put it in drive but once it hit 25 the rpms would sky rocket. I figured out when I put it into 2nd only, not drive, that I could drive the car up to 30-35 without revving it out. Mine is a 700R4 in a 86 Iroc, but I'm guessing the principle is the same. If it goes like mine did in 2nd, I'd say transmission. Other than that, I have no suggestions. Goodluck!

He suggests his engine wont climb over 3500, not slipping. if it slipped like a bad transmission, I would imagine he would say it revs like in neutral or something along those lines.

ok so i verified no vacumn leaks,
it doesnt matter what gear i am in . i could be in 2,3, or 4th gear it still does the same.
new carb as of last year.
i did see if i rev up the car only while driving to 4000 + rpm that it does it also.
when idle i can rev it up as much as i want.
when it does do this, and i kill the engine it sputters and farts like it is way too rich.
I have verified that the choke is getting 11 volts to it.
I made sure that the choke coil is correctly placed in.
new fuel pump as of last year.
still no go
i am at loss. i dont what else to do.
