Broken Distributor gear teeth
Ok well I found out what caused the problem of my car cutting off in the middle of the interstate.
Long story short...the dizzy gear had broken 3 teeth off and the rest of the teeth on the gear did not look normal. Compared to the new vs old...but it is the correct gear. I since replaced the gear with a new one from MSD but the dizzy will not drop back in, once it goes down on the gears on the cam it stops and goes n futher. So that leads me to believe the cam gear is screwed too...right?
now what would cause the prolem that created this mess? dont say my luck cause I already know I have bad luck with this motor.
Can a dizzy gear be replaced or do I have to get me a new cam?
Im not going to pull the motor cause im just not!....im sick of pulling it..I drained the oil and all.
so im going to just yank the cam out and have a look at it and if its bad..I guess I'll go bigger on the cam too

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
the dizzy gear is the 8531 MSD which goes with the MSD distributor that Im using. THe cam Im using is a custom cam for camshaftinnovations.com and when I purchased the cam he asked me what kind of distributor gear I was using and I told him. He also had me do the magnet test on it......and the gear sticks to the magnet.

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
sounds like the dizzy isnt lined up with the oil pump. turn motor over by hand and with a little tension on the dizzy it should drop in.
I would pull the pan and check for peices parts also.

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
heres some pictures of the new gear on the dizzy and the chewed up old gear.
Do you think my cam gear took some damage which is not allowing the new and the old to mesh right? there for not letting the dizzy go all the way down.

Before you pull the cam, pop that new gear off and put it back on the other way.

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
The new gear needs to be flipped end for end. The gear portion goes toward the top of the distributor. Also look for a dimple on the gear. If there is one it lines up with the rotor tip. GM's are this way, not sure about MSD's.
As for the damage, I can't say why that happened. It almost looks like the distributor was forced to stop turning and the cam gear sheared off the teeth.
How do the remaining teeth look?
RBob.

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
what do you mean end for end......the remaining teeth look no where near like the new ones....alomost like they have been thinned out by something......if you look close at the teeth you can almost see it compared to the new gear....when I go to put the new gear in...I can feel it slide just a tad onto the cam gear and then just stops!
AH!!!!!!!....I know what you mean now!>..I cant believe I did that!>..........let me go flip it and try again!....I'll let you guys know....give me a few!

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
If all of the teeth are worn then that distributor gear wasn't compatible with the cam gear.

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
oil pressure was/is fine....I run about 40 at ilde and about 75+ giving it gas and WOT...thats with 10/40 oil.
MSD told me that is could be cam end play.....but when I set it I used the right shims and measured to be sure...and when I had it put together buy my engine builder he had the shims....so I dont buy that.

Re: Broken Distributor gear teeth
Thanks for the chuckle!
Are you running a stock pump? It just sounds like you are running a normal iron gear with the much stronger roller cam gear.
FYI...I wanted to make sure my dizzy gear on my el cheapo eBay dizzy was compatible with my custom Hyd Roller Comp cam and when I called Comp they said the stock dizzy gear would suffice (as long as it is stock from a factory roller motor of course).
