Pick up coil question and help....

I'm stumped on a problem. I have a 1991 TA with the 305 TPI. I'm chasing down an intermittent stumble in the higher rev's, and thought I'd replace the magnetic pick up coil. When I pulled the distributor cap, the PU coil does not match the picture in the book, and I'm at a loss as to how to track down what I need. The book shows a stock PU coil under a retainer ring that you pop off to replace the coil. The 4 "fins" that create the pulse are part of a different assembly. What I actually have is a circular copper colored ring on the outside with a 8 fin "exciter" on the inside and the actual coil on the bottom....and short of a heat wrench and a cold chisel, I can't see how to get the whole assembly off to verify what's what.

Anybody know what I might be looking at here? Aftermarket distributor? Factory go fast part? This is a R7U car, so it was intended for the track.....any help appreciated as I have a track day coming up on the 26th and need to get this solved. E-mail direct to kos@smallbytes.net.

Pull the distributor and knock the pin out of the drive gear, note that there may be a dimple on the gear, that should point to the rotor tip when you reasemble. Then you can pull that shaft out of the unit and get at the pickup coil.

Yep, that did it....thanks. Although it still did not solve my problem of missing at high revs. I'll post a new thread to see if anyone has an answer. Thanks again for the tip.....
