how strong are stock motor mounts
I was just curious if I was really in need of changing them. They look in great shape, and I am pretty lost on knowing how to get them out. Plus if I can save a little cash it would be great. My mo tor is out and I am bout to put the new one in so this is why im asking.

Re: how strong are stock motor mounts
you mean the stock clamshells and bracket or the bushing?
either way, the stock mounts are pretty strong... strong enough for that 383 your making
stock bushings should be replaced but if they look ok, you can reuse them. I went with new poly mounts just to replace the stock 160K mile units

stick your stock bolt through the rubber mount and wiggle it with your hand. See how much play they have. It's hard to see visually if they are torn up or not.
If they are, stock replacements are $20 per when I did mine. Or poly ones are about $40 per I think? They're a bear to get to, but not too bad with the engine out. Hope they are ok as is.

They're not fine. They're rubber. Meaning they flex and deteriorate.
Replace them with poly inserts while the replacing is easy.

Please save yourself the hassle later when u start it up and your headers hit your steering shaft and the engine moves like an unbalanced washing machine.
I had a post on here asking how to get to the bolts on mine.

And how would I be able to find yours? I searched and found nothing too helpful. You have a link by chance?

Re: how strong are stock motor mounts
Ok, i found my post but it wont help you much. On the bottom part of the mount, the part attached to the k-member there are 3 bolts holding it on #15 metric i think. The problem is the nuts are inside the k-member. To get to them i had to take the wheels off, disconnect the tie rod at the spindle and the shock, pop the a-arm down out of the spindle, take off the a-arm and spring. Now is a good time to install some pollyurethane bushings in your a-arms and check the condition of your shocks and upper and lower ball joints. once thats out of the way its easy to get to the 3 nuts. You might have the necessary extentions and swivels to do it with out removing anything but the wheels, but i couldnt. Now you have a few options on motormounts. They sell solid mounts but then the vibration from the motor wont be dampened, you could use new stock mounts or polyurethane, they sell just rubber or pollyurethane part that you have to drill out the rivets in the lower mount and replace them with the bolts included in the kit.
On a side note go trough everything you can before the motor goes in, i had to lift mine up 5 or 6 times already because i rushed.
Good Luck
