weird pcv issue

hey guys

i noticed my idle was alil high and had a slight stumble when reving the engine

and is smells rich

sounded like a vacuum leak.

i already replaced my pcv valve just to not have any issues cuz the car is used and was probably over due

the store gave me soem generic one off the shelf.

now my dads buddy checked it and it seems to be always open and is always flowing extra air into the engine causing the system to think its got more air than fuel and dumps more fuel to keep the balance

i put my thumb over the pcv and it sucks right onto my skin.

with my thumb plugging the pcv my idle got better and engien sounded smoother. not by a great deal but definately noticed the difference and it went back to slight higher idle as soon as i took my thumb off

the pcv is new and rattles to tell me it works

my dads buddy says the pcv is supposed to keep opening and closing but the spring inside isnt strong enough to close the valve after the vacuum pulls it open so it stays open

so does a 305 v8 tpi need a special pcv valve or whats going on?

Re: weird pcv issue

Its supposed to be open all the time - sort of. The only time it should be closed is when there is no vacuum, or at least not enough to open it - conditions like WOT. Parts throttle and idle it should be open. Its supposed to act as a controlled vacuum leak. Take it out and hold it in your hand. Now shake it. Does it rattle? Yes? Then its fine.
