450 hp!

Ok guys its going to happen sometime but what with? I want a 450 hp engine so like 400-410 to the rear. But what will be the best way to go?
1. Get the LS1 and make 450hp and what should i do to get that much power out of it?
or
2. Get a 350 from the junk yard and make it a carb.

So what would be the best running engine and i also want to try and keep it at a reasonable price.
thanks
kevin

Re: 450 hp!

Go with an LS1, you can make that power easy and keep the fuel mileage up.

Re: 450 hp!

It depends how much money you have. LS1 will be more expensive and complicated but reliable, fuel mileage etc.. Carbed will be cheaper, easier, but definitly less reliable.

Re: 450 hp!

LS1 is very complicated, and typically more expensive.
450HP might be 350HP to the rear wheels. Remember 20% drivetrain loss or thereabouts. 450 - 90HP = 340RWHP. So to get to 400RWHP you'll need 500HP. Which do you want? That's a ridiculous amount of HP, you sure you need that much? My 350 makes about 370HP, and that's more then I can use on the street without needing diapers.

Re: 450 hp!

if you get a built 383 for about 3500-4500 bucks from summit ready to put in. have your tranny built,(800-1200 bucks) and put in about a 2400-2600 stall,(300 bucks) your rs will be a freaking rocket! even if you choose to go with a carb, and if it's built right, your car will be reliable. then if you think you need more, just add 250 shot of juice.

if you choose to go with an ls1, your going to spend 2-3 times that amount.

Re: 450 hp!

So your saying it would cost about $9200 minimum to go LS1? Not quite. There are other alternatives to the LS1, since they are usually overpriced. Try 6.0 or 5.3 truck motor. They are the same externally, except they are cast iron like the motor in your car now. You may need a new intake manifold, accessories, and oil pan. There has been a couple threads about going LS for a third gen around here so check it out. Its really not that crazy. Many hotrodders pay big bucks for features that come stock with an LS block. The heads flow nicely, the fuel injection and ignition are awesome.
