Oil/oil preassure question
Lately, after finding and reconnecting my oil preassure gauge wire while installing fog lights. I've come to find my oil preassure all over the gamut.
It goes from just above the red marked area to under the 3/4 mark (between ~10psi and 3/4.
Heres two varriables for this that I'm thinking about...
1 is that I have an open element air cleaner and chrome valve covers, and the way its set up, the breather hose from the original air cleaner assembly is all I have, and its just comming straight up out of the valve cover, and not connecting to anything besides that.
2 my car has a pretty good oil leak in itself
i go through about 2 quarts a week roughly.
I know for a fact that its both my rear main seal, and my timing cover gasket.
I would love any suggestions to how I can at least temporarily fix this, one of two reasons.
1 I don't have the time, nor money right now to pull the engine.
2 if I do end up pulling the engine, I'm going to do more than just fix a few leaks, I'll be doing, a cam, new timing chain, new oil pan, crank, piston rings, and do a little work on the top end.
So right now its not TOO much of an issue for me, but I'd at least like to keep appropriate preassure if I can, it just worries me at times...
Right now I have a bottle of this special oil treatment I found at autozone for $10
It claims that it helps reseal and recondition rear main, and most other common oil leak locations.
So far it looks like its working, but just wondering if anybody else had any luck with other types of products that claim this.

Re: Oil/oil preassure question
This happened to my car. I used something similar to what you are going to use and it completly cleaned my oil system. Mine was completly clogged. However for me even with this oil treatment stuff my oil pressure was still low/all over the place. About a month after i treated it i spun a bearing and wound up getting a new engine.
IMO i would say get ready for pullin and rebuilding the engine if thats what your going to do. Once my pressure went crazy on me it was all downhill from there which sucks to say the least, but you do get to work on your car alot.

at least for the time being.
Altough it would be a good excuse to pull the 305 and rebuild it, money is a HUGE factor.
My family isn't the poorest, but me working part time at a grocery store at just above minimum wage would mean that I would be car-less for a long... time.
If I got lucky if my engine does blow, I'll be driving my dads 86 monte SS to and from, but that thing has a 77' trans am 400 in it and sucks down gas like nothing else I've seen. Which is whats making me love my little 305.
EDIT: Would it possibly help if I went to the zone and got one of those cheap breather filters and popped it into my valve covers?
I can see how its setup now would cause a drop in preassure, but not too sure..
And as ALWAYS, you guys rock on here, all my questions seem to get answered by wise/experienced individuals in a timely fashon.
Thanks!

Re: Oil/oil preassure question
Well, I talked to a few people in person about it and they mentioned that my oil pump is becoming weak.
Don't remember if I specificly stated that at start up it will have decent preassure, but after warming up it drops.

Re: Oil/oil preassure question
That is normal. Put a mechanical gauge on it and see what the pressure really is. As long as it doesn't go below 10psi at idle, it's probably ok. If it climbs to 40psi when you give it some throttle, stop worrying about it.

Re: Oil/oil preassure question
my oil pressure gauge pins at the top when I start my car. It is an stock 87iroc 305. I have already relaced the part that looks like a bell and is near the firewall. No change in its condition. I dont burn oil. What do you suppose could be wrong with mine?
