It is very possible that it is a bearing but you should be able to hear it at idle. It could be a crank bearing. I have also had a wrist pin start to go bad and it would only make noise at high rpms. Has the motor been overheated recently? I overheated mine real bad and that when I lost oil pressure and the wrist pin started making noise. It is something that isn't sever at the start but can progressively get worse. I have seen a 4.3L that had one fail and it isn't pretty. The pin failed and the rod came back up and pushed the piston through the block and fender. You'll definately have to try and listen for it at idle. If you hear nothing and it doesn't get worse in about 2 days then I would say it is the wrist pin. It could also be the rocker arms. If there loose then they will make noise. I would check that first since it is cheaper. If you have a long screw driver you can put it in different places on the motor and use it like a stethoscope to track down the location the noise is coming from. Can you describe the sound? Is it high pitched or real low? At what rpm does it start. When my wrist pin started to fail it would make noise cruising around when the motor would be running over 2000-2500rpms.

Re: weird noise at high rpm
what do you mean by high 5k? 7K? 12K? what? especially with a 327 and people conceived notion that they are meant to spin into the stratosphere do to the sole fact of being a 327 you could be experiencing valve float

I'm going to state the obvious and say that they didn't paint the guage red in a certain location for a pretty color addative to your dashboard. Red = Bad on a stock motor, no matter what it is.
