anything for rings while heads are off?
Im switching to a comp cam and 113 heads on my 1987 305tpi is there any additive I can spray or pour on the pistons, top ring and cylinder walls while the heads are off to help break up any carbon or sticking rings? thanks.

Nope, none that i'd use or recommend.
Once the engine is running again, and it's idling at operating temp, pull a vacuum line and put it in a gallon jug of washer fluid. Hold the idle up to about 2500RPM and LET IT DRINK.
That'll clean out the top end nicely.

Are they already off? If not, do this before removal.
Although I don't recall hearing the washer fluid thing. Guess it wouldn't be a problem. Seafoam is the typical recommendation.
If the heads are already off, many, many times I've just scrapped the piston with it at TDC, and blew everything clean with compressed air and wiped down the cylinder wall after taking the piston to BDC. No issues that I'm aware of.

Re: anything for rings while heads are off?
thanks..the heads are still on and Ive done seafoam twice in the last 8 months or so...gotta love that cloud of smoke afterwards...Is the washer fluid a joke? wouldnt that be non combustible water mostly? If not it sure would be alot cheaper than seafoam
edit: just did some searching..Sonix I dont know why I doubted ya,.....seafoam $7 on your mastercard, monthly internet bill $25 on your mastercard, learning you can return the seafoam and clean your windshield and intake for $1 on thirdgen.org....priceless.

Not sure I've used a plastic scraper for anything but the windshield, actually.

It would take a while with a plastic scraper, and can you find one small enough? I'd use a brass or steel bristle brush.
Well heck, i'd just use the washer fluid or water. Let your engine clean itself, don't bother using elbow grease if you don't have to. Cleans itself just like a head gasket failure can
