need help with balancer and flywheel.

Hello everyone, Yep its me again asking for help. This time its with the harmonic balancer. I was about to take my rotating assy to get balanced, when the machinist asked what components i was using and when i told him a stock balancer and planning on spinning up to 6200 he said that i was pushing it and that i should get the SFI balancer. What do you guys think? can i use the stocker?
Second question is can i use a LT1 flywheel on a non LT1 block? I wanted to use it because when i bought the t56 i got the flywheel and a pretty much brand new clutch. Thanks again for help.

Re: need help with balancer and flywheel.

So you are buying a new balancer or reusing the old one? I'm going to be running mine up around 6500. Nothing was ever said to me. The shop I took mine to only balances to around 2500 because apparently that's where the most harmonics occur.

I have never heard of anyone trying to run an LT1 crank in a different block before. I'm using LT1 rods, but you'd want to check out the diameters of the main journals, the crank snout for the balancer, and how it seals in the rear. I'm pretty sure the stroke should be the same at least.

I wouldnt trust the stock balancer. Summit sells a cheap balancer that will hold up to higher rpms.

SFI balancers are just "safety approved", they aren't necessarily any better, they just have accountability. I wouldn't waste the money on it.
I have the $59 summit one, it's great.

Re: need help with balancer and flywheel.

Which one did you get sonic? what part number? I really didnt want to get one but I guess id rather be safe than sorry. I would like to save as much as possible. The cam i am going with is the 276hr and is rated 1900 to 5600 so i didnt see why a stock replacement would be sufficient, but the guys at summit recommended that i should get the SFI one. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, but for some reason I must have misread the word flywheel for crankshaft. That happens to me sometimes.

Re: need help with balancer and flywheel.

Because I have had the outer ring move in relation to the inner on stock type balancers, I prefer to use one that can't do that - especially if it is going to be revved high.

I think the machinist was trying to say get a better balancer than the stock 6-3/4".
A stock 8" would be fine or an 8" one that isn't Chinese junk. (OEM is $66.99)You don't have to spend $250.
The job a balancer has to do gets harder as torque or rpm increase.
BTW if the cam is rated at 1900 to 5600 rpm, why are you going to spin it above 6000?
