Re: fuel pump
Is it hittin against the fuel pump rod? You have to get the arm of the fuel pump under that rod/shaft.

Re: fuel pump
The rod/shaft rests on the top of the fuel pump arm. It can be tricky trying to hold the shaft up and getting the arm under it. Also, double check to make sure it is the right pump for that block.

Re: fuel pump
There's a 3/8" threaded hole in front of the pump pushrod. It usually has a short filler bolt in it. If you take it out and use a longer one, it will hold the pushrod up while you install the pump. Not too tight, just enough to hold it. Be sure to put the short one back or it will leak oil.

Re: fuel pump
I prefer the method jv999 mentioned, but there is another option. Grease the rod and stick it up in its hole. The grease will hold it in place while you install the pump. Then it gets washed out when the hot oil starts flowing over it. If the rod is on the high part of the cam lobe, you can bump the starter until its on the low part of lobe. That will help to get pump seated since you won't be fighting the pump spring.
