Re: stupid bolt!
Long extension and a wobble socket. If the crossmember is out you can drop the tail of the tranny down and get to the 2 top bolts no problem. I always drop the tail end down, remove the 2 top bolts, raise tranny back to normal position, then remove the bottom 4 bolts.
If ya drop the tranny down, be careful of the dist hitting the fire wall. I always pull my dist out, but removing the cap would probably be enough.

I just took mine out a couple weeks ago and that one was the most difficult for me as well. I believe I just used a wrench and took it out a 16th of a turn at a time.

Re: stupid bolt!
After many transmission swaps I've gotten better at both the top and bottom method. Its frustrating till you figure out how to get the bolt. a ball socket from the bottom is great, or if you have removed a bunch of emissions crap from your engine (AIR tubes) then its easy enough to get at it from the top if you move the harness out of the way.

Slips? I hope you haven't stripped it. I forget what size I used but if you have the other bolts out just try to use one of those to see what size wrench has the tightest grip.

Re: stupid bolt!
As long as teh car is solidly supported, pretty much anything solid that wont dent the trans pan will do. The trans weighs around 200 lbs or so, so an old book to cushon the pan will work ok to prevent damage The engine comes away easy enough, but there are dowel pins that can make it a pain to rejoin them. In many ways, its easier to pulll the trans and engine together and work on them out of the car. In the car, you will not only have to clear the motor mounts, but have the trans and engine aligned so the dowel pins can engage teh motor. Its not impossible, but you do have to jimmy the engine around a bit to get it lined up. Alternatively, you can put the trans on a trans jack and just pull it back into the tunnel and out of the way while you work on the motor. This will require disconnecting everything including the driveshaft from the trans (also make sure you drain it, or be prepaired for the red waterfall out the tailhousing).
