how much power do i need?

ive got an 85 hard top and when im done i want it to run 11's. not 11.0 just somewhere in the 11's... i have a stock rear with 3.73 gears and a clutch type posi, and a built 700r4, and soon in will have all the umi suspension parts everywhere, and most likely ill have some sort of drag radial on for a tire

my question is how much power would i need to push that car into the 11's? im planning a 383 or possibly i have my eye on a 400 that i could pick up for 100 bucks, but i already have a 4 bolt 350 that i could stroke, and on top i was planning AFR heads of some sort, a big roller cam, big, and a good intake and carb with hooker long tubes and full 3in exhaust, or if i could still use my hedman long tubes and 2.5in exhaust that would be great, but it might restrict me, would this combo get me to where i want to be?

Re: how much power do i need?

Do a google search for drag calculator. There are several out there. It will depend on the weight of your car but somewhere around 380 to 400 at the rear will put you where yo want to be. Remember that all of the calculators assume your car is going to hook so your suspension will probably need to be addressed.

Re: how much power do i need?

if i had a stock rear with an aftermarket diff and gears and axles, with about 3.73 gears, with 15x8 wheels and slicks, would it hook? with all the umi suspension parts, and would i have to worry about breaking the rear end?

Re: how much power do i need?

You will definetly break the rear if it hooks up the way you think and especially if you use slicks. May want to look into getting stronger axles too.

Re: how much power do i need?

yes the rear end will need to be one of the first items addressed not so much in breaking axles... however the axle tubes have a bad tendancy to walk forward and destroy gears...
