have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

I just dropped my 350 in my car about a month ago but as i was trouble shooting a problem somebody said these rockers are way too loose so they tightened them down WAY too tight and rounded the lobes on the cam. Metal dust was all in the oil and the intake valley and my oil pressure had been dropping.

So out comes the motor again and this time its a full rebuild. my question is what is the best setup for good hp numbers?

Parts i already have are performer eps intake manifold, edelbrock 650 carb, voodoo cam, hooker headers, flowmaster, poerted and polished 416 heads. Advertised Duration :262°/268° Duration @ .050 IN/EX :219°/227°Gross Valve lift IN/EX.468''/.489'' LSA and ICL112/108 RPM Range:1400-5800

what would the best rotating assembly be for this setup? eagle 383 kit?

Re: have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

I originally went the cheapest route on my 383 (Powerhouse brand). Big mistake. Piston skirts hit crank, replaced pistons, new pistons wouldn't work with rods (floating pin pistons). Bought new rods (Eagle 3D stroker rods. Exellent rods, BTW) Had to get everything re-balanced.. I wound up spending more than the eagle kit would have cost.
If I ever have to rebuild my stroker, I'll be going with the Eagle rotating assy.
IMHO, It's a good compromise between cost and quality.

yea, i know eagle is a well known brand, and the prices werent bad... are there any other kits besides 383, like 396 or something that would produce more power? how much power should i expect to get from this setup? thanks

You could always do a 400 sb .030 over with a 4" crank. Nets you 427 inches, but it's kind of expensive. For the price the eagle kits are the best I've seen, and they come balanced if you order the whole rotating assembly.

I went with the eagle balanced assembly and have never had problems from the kit. Worth the money.

Before you give up on your 350 check it out. If your crank is good you can reuse it and spend the money elsewhere. I will say that I like the scat rotating assembly.

Yuor rotating assembly is a balance system. Pistons must be off the rods too be balanced, along with rods, crank, rings, rod bolts, balancer, flex plate or flywheel. If you change one then you need everything rebalanced. The crank rotating mass needs to balance the pistons, rods ect.

If you buy a unbalanced set up you will need to take it and have it balanced. Before you run it.

yea, i found out that it would be lk 500 bucks to get an unbalanced assembly ballanced, does it matter what i run for flywheel/balancer? will that throw off the whole balance?

Re: have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

Yes it does. If you buy a internaly balanced crank you will use a 350-305 balancer and flywheel. If you buy a externaly balanced crank you will need a 400 balancer and flywheel. Same flywheel for one piece rear main seal crankshaft. Make sure you take the balancer and flywheel with you to the engine shop,

If you use "standard balancer, flex plate or flywheel" you should be able to replace a bad one with a new one if needed. But if you want to maybe add a flywheel in place of a flex plate (converting auto to stick) then I'm not sure it will work or not. I'm thinking it's been done before, just not by me. Anyone else know?

I ordered an internally balanced kit so my RAM flywheel should work with it, I'm not sure what to do with the balancer though. it really looked like i couldn't fit a 2 o'clock pointer in there, but i was told chevy didn't make a 12 o'clock one. is there something wrong here?

Re: have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

Look real close to see if there is a smaller line at the 2 o clock. If not a cheap fix is to buy timming tape and wrap the blancer.

on the balancer i have there is a line almost directly up on the keyway, which would be 2 0'clock right? but the problem is i couldnt see any way to see it during timing because of power steering and stuff.

Re: have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

keyway is at 2 o clock on a chevy if I remember right. On another post on here I just read stated that 305 balancers have the grove at 12 o clock. I will have to go to the shop and look tomorow.

Re: have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

ya, if i remember right, when i put it on at TDC the keyway was about 2 o'clock. a guy on summit said that chevy NEVER made a 12 0'clock balancer, which i find hard to beieve just by looking in my engine bay and i have heard people say there was a 12 o'clock.
----------
ya, i think there must be a 12 p'clock one just by looking at my engine bay, can i put a 305 balancer on the 383? hey basset, whats into your 383 and what kind of power do you make?

Re: have to get 350 rebuilt, cheap 383???

what are you running for intake/carb?

would you think i would break 400 with my setup? voodoo cam .468/.489 lift 262/268 duration, ported and polished 416 heads with valve job, performer 650 carb and performer intake...

how much hp will just the stroker kit add?

Eldebrock performer RPM Holley 4779 750 DP.You will be close to 400 if not a little over. May need bigger carb.

oh, alright, well i still have to figure out what to run for the balancer... i have a 12 o clock tab and a 2 o clock balancer. i was thinking just to get a new balancer anyways but should i try to fing a 12 balancer somewhere besides summit or get a 2 o clock balancer and tab and try it that way?

You could buy a aftermarket timming tab.
