air bag

With my 90, my "infl rest" light would blink then shut off when i would start it. That IS showing it is working correctly am i right? Okay, well my 91 it stays on. what could this mean? I cant help myself, i hate air-bags, especially the dangerous old ones and might be safer without one. Please tell me this indicator stuck on isnt telling me its going to randomly blow up in my face... Any suggestions to deactivating it? I have an airbag phobia!

Re: air bag

Have you checked to make sure it's plugged in? It's plenty safe, just disconnect the battery and pull the airbag fuse before doing any work on it. As long as it can't get power, it's not gonna blow in your face.

Re: air bag

If I pull the fuse will that prevent it from going off? I want to disable the thing.

Re: air bag

It should, but I would disconnect the battery too. That way there's no way it could go off. With only the fuse pulled, there could be like a one in a million chance that something shorts and it goes off.

Re: air bag

So, is there any way of putting like a Grant steering wheel on our air bagged equipped third gens? Obviously the air bag would not be there, and they dont sell a steering wheel adapter, do the older adapters work for our newer air bag cars?

Re: air bag

It should work fine. I haven't done it in person so I can't guarantee it, but the steering column is the same. There's just 2 extra wires for the airbag, and the airbag itself which is in the steering wheel.

Re: air bag

If you disconnect the batteyr there is no chance of the air bag going off unless you, yourself put voltage to it with another battery or something. It's hard to say what your air bag light is from. Possibly a blown fuse (I'm sure you already checked that, clockspring, or an open wire in the air bag circuit. I think it is most likely a clockspring. To check the clockspring you would have to check for an open circuit in the clockspring it's self through a contiuity test. However it's probly more of a pain in the *** than it's worth. In my 92 I first put a grant steering wheel in it befor I put a momo wheel in it and had to snip all the wires from the clockspring to the horn to make it work. If you do put another steering wheel on you're still gonna have that annoying light constantly on but if you remove the cluster you can pop out the infl rest bulb. Cluster removal is pretty straight forward just pop out the dimmer switch shaft, drop the column down, and remove the cluster. I don't get on third gen as much as i want to but i'll try to keep an eye out for any updates. P.S. if you like to use your horn don't snip all the wires.
