88 Iroc WHite exhaust smoke and gasket problems

Hey i have my 1988 Iroc on the road now and i knew when i bought it i was gunna have problems, its the reason i got a deal.

Now i sort of know whats wrong.

The new dual flowmaster must have an exhaust leak going into the engine b/c after 20 mins of drivin endless clouds of white (not grey or black) smoke pour out of the pipes and the exhaust smokes also under the engine slightly. The ratio of smoke in the back is about 60/40 with the left and right respectively.

Will this affect my driving before i fix it? I know water must be getting into the engine and the head gaskets need to be redone (last owner blew them from nitrous (ugh), but until i fix the heads if i only drive 4 miles to and back from work each day and the rest drive my other car will i be ok? And what are your thoughts on if im wrong about my problems?

Thanks guys, Ash

Your best bet is to stop driving it immediately.

Short trips are worse in this case than extended trips. Water will be evaporated out of a fully warmed engine, but after only a short trip, the water is much more likely to stay in the engine, and even get into the oil. Bad news all around.

Make sure you get the heads checked for cracks while they are off. This wouldn't happen to be a 0.060" overbored block, would it?

Either need that information from whomever rebuilt it, or measure the cylinders with the heads off.

Why do you say that?

If true, and caused by the nitrous, you could have some major problems inside that engine.

Re: 88 Iroc WHite exhaust smoke and gasket problems

someone told me i'd need new piston rings, and you're right, it does seem like i need to do a full top end rebuild.

BTW, let me give you some back story, sorry, haha, but this car i bought for $2900 from a kid who bought it from 1st owner, the 2nd owner knew nothing about cars and i got a steal anyway. Body is mint, no rust, bondo, scratches, dents, and a 7 month old paint job. I knew when i bought it i'd need to do work, but me and my father figured that getting the car with such a spectacular body would pay off in the end once engine work was done

Full rebuild is more likely, especially if it was abused/neglected by an ignorant owner.

Agree on the good body/interior deal. Did the same myself last fall, with the intent of replacing what the previous owner did not - the drivetrain.

Curious why you have "320 TPI" in your user information.

probably a typo lol i did all my info stuff after i bought the car probably very late at night, dont worry i'm well aware there's no 320 chevy engine in my car lol

yeah well idk where to change it haha but i believe using the right hand side numeral pad on my keyboard causes the typo (5 right above 2)
