Will my old distributer work with new motor?

Hey guys,

I'm just about to finish up the final touches of my engine swap, hooking up connectors, getting my new electric fuel pump working and the stuff like that. One question came up though...

I am replacing my 1984 305 with a 350 from a 98 Silverado. No, it's not an LT or LS motor. Aside from needing a different distributor gear for the roller cam (melonized I believe), will my original distributor work in the new motor? Or will I have to get a new distributor? I have the coil-in-cap variety that I'd like to keep. However, if I do have to change, will my cap/coil and all that swap over or will it be a totally different set up? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The distributor will work (assuming you're using the entire '85 induction/computer system), and the gear should be fine. Getting a new one from the dealer would be safer, though.

Yes, I am keeping everything original from the induction/computer system (except for the new engine in it's entirety...but I am keeping all the sensors and all that).

So other than getting the new gear for the roller motor since I used to have a flat tappet cam...the distributor from my original motor will physically bolt up with no problems. Cool...

Then when I asked about the gear, Sallee Cheverolet asked if I know what "size" distributor I have...big or small and I can't answer them. All i know is that I have the HEI Coil-in-cap design...any ideas there?

I believe the "big" distributor would be what you have (coil in cap). Small would be the distributor for use with external coil that has a physically smaller cap that yours.
