i had a similar noise after i installed my serpentine setup, it was the bolt behind the p.s. pullie. it backed its self out and was rubbing and rattling on the back of the pullie.

Ive heard alt pullies make that noise. Enigine runs too good for it to be anything internal.

Very clean engine. Nice

Remove the serpentine belt and start the engine. If the noise goes away w/out the belt in tact, it's either the alternator or the A/C compressor clutch....

Still could be. And it may sound horrid but doesnt mean its bad. My grandfather was seconds from giving me his truck because everyone thought he threw a rod (even me). Turned out it was a 12 dollar pully.

And something that just came to mind. You say it happens after warm up... Maybe its the A.I.R. or water pump. Deff try removing the belt.

Deff not alt then LOL. Like I said; possibly AIR pully or water pump. Let us know what happens when you pull your belt.

Btw; what do you do/use to keep/make your engine so damn clean.

Good luck!

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

Take a long metal tool, like a prybar, breaker bar, or something similar, and listen to the different accessories. This should help narrow down where it's coming from. You do it by putting one end of the tool against your ear, and the other against the accessory. Be careful of the belt and pulleys, though. It's a handy trick my dad showed me, you can listen to pretty much any part of the engine - hold to the valve covers to hear the rockers, to the intake to hear the injectors, etc.

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

I had a similar rattle and just like mentioned above, there was a bolt that fell between the water pump pulley and the belt, so every time the pulley would turn, it would toss around the bolt and make that horrible rattle. I agree in taking off the belt. If that gets rid of the rattle, then spin the accessories by hand and see if you can see where its coming from... good luck!

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

had that same problem with my 88 ta. It ended up being the bearings inside the water pump. Also take your belt off and check you ideler pulley. the bearing may be shot inside that cause that noise. But now my engine makes that noise every once n awhile again n i found out its my p.s pump.

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

Not sure if it's been said already but take the belt off and start the engine for just a few moments. Still make the noise?

Ditto on the long rod to your ear. Between these two methods you should be able to narrow it down quickly.

Did you try the prybar trick on the valve covers?

I would vote heat shield or possibly where the exhaust bolts up to the manifolds (adaptors). Heat could cause them to expand and rattle if they are loose.

My high school auto teacher had a home made stethescope lopped off the round bit at the end and put a rod in it's place. Doc Lawson we called him hehe! Best teacher I ever had, even when he kept calling the firebird a firechicken hehe!

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

well, its good and bad news its not the accessories. Good that its not an expensive accessory to replace. Bad that its not an accessory to replace. Does the rattle increase with rpms? I'd say jiggle around the exhaust components when the car is cold. Could be a bolt that came loose from the manifold and wye pipe flange and is just dangling loose. Jiggle the exhaust heat shields. Maybe its your car telling you that it wants headers! It runs too smooth for it to be internal...*crosses fingers*

Belt tensioner - 99% guaranteed - not the pulley, but the tensioner itself. They are fairly cheap and easy to change though.

MY CAR MAKES THE SAME NOISE!!!!!

Its been driving me nuts for a while now. I cant locate it for the life of me. I have the smog and AC deleted and it still does it, I've run it without the belt besides. I fear it is in internal. You see, mine is not constant. Under engine acceleration (reving up) there is no rattle, but when I allow it to fall back to idle it rattles for several seconds (sometimes worse than others) then quiets down. Heres the kicker, if my engine is aprox. 1/2 quart low on the dipstick. Then it rattles constantly, until I refill it to near overfull levels. Then it goes back to the few seconds at idle.

I would PAY to find the cure for this!!!

May be bearing clearance. Hows your oil pressure? If its lowers a bit after idling try some thicker oil...

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

Sounds very familiar, a while back I had almost that same rattle, it was exhaust. I have dual cats and there was a little bracket that kept the cats together and in place. Drove me nuts because I couldn't get to it well, at least not when hot without burning myself. Just happened to poke it with a screw driver one day and behold it went quiet. Ended up just sticking the business end of the mig welder in and pulling the trigger a few seconds blindly, been gone since. I would look at the not so obvious spots to see if something is hiding, lol missing any wrenches?

Well, I have a completely custom exhaust; no rattles there.

Haha, no I'm not missing any tools that I know of.

Yeah my oil pressure is not so good at idle when hot. Its only about 25 psi. I've done some experimenting with oil thickness but considering I'm allready running 10w-40 with a bit of Lucas added I dont think any thicker is advisable. Hopefully she holds on till I can find the suitable parts for my engine swap.

Re: enyone know what this ratting noise could be?(video)

pull 1 spark plug wire off at a time, if the noise stops its a bearing ( says small prayer before starting)hope this isnt what it is but it will eliminate the possibility, later jimmy

Sounds like thats prob you issue. If your just wanting it to hang on a little longer Id go with 15W-50 without additives. Just got to remember to let it warm/run a little before taking off.

Done this with 3 Jeeps, which they are common for bearing clearance issues. Did a full SeaFoam treatment and then used thicker oil; shut em right up.

something that will also greatly assist and making things like this a whole lot easier is making some wooden ramps so you can just drive up and go under instead of jacking your car up which is very time consuming. Just stack a few 2x4s and nail them together...

Good thing I only said 99% then, eh? My LT1 and a friend's TPI 305 both made that same sound (if I'm hearing the right one in the vid) and both needed tensioners to fix it.
