Need Some info

I have the option of Buying a 92 z28 For 400.00 Has no engine but come with the Tranny! If my reading up on these 92 z28's is correct they came with the 350 TPI engine in them right? And There is no VIN tag under The drivers side windshield but There is a VIN tag in the drivers side door way? Why would they do this with the vin tag? The guy assured me it was not taken out by the windshield, that it was always in the doorway!

Anyway I want to put the original size engine back in So Should I stay TPI Or what would be the easiest way to go?

The VIN tag never appeared in the door from the factory.

Its not the metal tag! It more like a paper tag with protected plastic on it.

Re: Need Some info

If I was to go looking for a 350 TPI engine at The junk yards What cars would be the ones to look at to get all the parts I need? I also need the computer and stuff also as The owner of this took all that out.

All cars had that, it's an information decal, with weights and tire pressures and whatnot. It's not a legal VIN tag for registration, that's the metal one under the windshield. If the tag is missing from there, then this is more than likely a stolen car being parted out.

Re: Need Some info

Well I thought the same thing, But the guy has a clean title with it.
If I get a chance I'll take some pics of it, I looked at where the Vin tag was supposed to be and it doesn't look like it was broken off or removed in a supicious way!
He also told me this was a GM project car, now if there was any truth to that I don't know. I'am gonna get the Vin NO# and run it and see what I come up with.
I haven't bought this car yet as I'am still weighing my options on what to do with replacing the motor.
It does have Leather seats front and back and the front are electric seats.
I'll get some pics and post them up here and get your guys input on this car!

Re: Need Some info

Before you even get that car on the road, an officer has to come out and verify the VIN. When the officer sees that its not there, bye bye car...

(lol)-
Is he right, sorry to say it, but he is. I once bought a project 87 camaro where the VIN tag was rusted to the point where you couldn't read half the numbers. I pulled it out and took it to the DMV with the title to register it. You should have seen the look on the lady's face when I slapped it on the counter and asked how I could get a new one. She lectured me worse than my mom ever did. It is highly illegal to take those tags out.

You could run that vin you have from the title the guy has on carfax or one of those other online services for about 15 bucks. But without the tag, who is to know that the VIN, or title for that matter, even belongs to that car. If I were you, I would find a cop friend ... or a friend with a cop friend ... to ask and see what you can do with it or find out what is what and do it legal. If nothing else, they may seize it from the guy trying to sell it to you and then sell it at auction ... where you can buy it clean and legal.

Re: Need Some info

OK NEW INFO ... I just asked a State Police buddy of mine ...

The VIN is stamped in 9 places on the car ... from the motor (which I know you said is gone), the dash and in several locations on the chassis itself. Get the car on a lift and start looking. If you find a VIN and it matches the title, you are good to go. If not, call the cops and buy it at auction.
