deleting A.I.R.

I was thinking about deleting AIR and some other emissions systems from my car.

I had a few questions.

1.) Will this decrease gas mileage

2.) Will this put the computer "out of tune"

3.) Will this give me any more horsepower?

Thanks!
Bill

Re: deleting A.I.R.

Well, at the very least, you will be uncluttering the engine bay. I have a "cage" over my spark plugs from AIR and that's why I'll pull mine.

But, also removing 1 item from the belt drive is a good start aswell, though I doubt the pump uses much power.

Anyone know what type of fittings and sealing compound (if needed) would be used to plug the ports in the manifold?

I suppose I could measure them..

There are several threads on this topic in this Tech/General board, and the Exhaust board, both about how illegal it is in the United States, and how there is no gain except in cleaning up the engine bay.

I heard it will make your engine run slightly lean, but won't affect wot. Personally, my hatred for hippies was enough alone to convince me to remove mine.

Well i took everything off from the cat to the air lines and you could slightly tell that it was breathing better or something.

That's called the "placebo effect".

Re: deleting A.I.R.

"Placebo effect" ... lol.

A lot of people make horsepower in their minds. Stickers can do it for some guys.

Anyway, I am all for uncluttering the engine bay, but I'm not for bad air. I just did a full drivetrain and exhaust swap (355 TPI, rebuilt trans., rear end gears, hooker from front to back w/ catco converter) and left all of my smog equipment on. Even bought the headers with the A.I.R. tubes. So while my car is FAR from stock now, other than lots of shiny polished aluminum and chrome it still looks stock and will blow cleaner exhaust w/o really compromising power.

Re: deleting A.I.R.

A good engie (even a stock tune) doesn't need the AIR pump system, if thecat is good.

My system is gone, but I have a Magnaflow cat. And my emissions #s are virtually zero. So, despite my car being "technically" illegal, my #s are great.

Everything was gone when I bought the car, so I expected to have problems, but no.

Re: deleting A.I.R.

What other systems can be deleted (i.e. the Charcoal cansiter) and what is involved?

Also, when deleting A.I.R., will I need a new belt and a new pulley? If so, what size? Where can I buy them?

Thanks again!

I have news for you. Hippies write their politicians and they vote. I hope your local politician is a car guy and will ignore their cries for tougher laws to stop people from making their cars "stinky."

The charcoal system is what cleans up the gas fumes from your fuel tank. Without it, you'll be smelling gasoline in your car. I would leave it.

The AIR system is there to clean up the emissions while the engine is cold and the cat-converter is cold. Without it, your cat-converter will fail sooner, unless you have a cat designed to work without air. Its all a moot point though, because it doesnt matter how clean the engine is without it, its still illegal on a street car in the United States to remove it. The technology has gotten better in the last 20 years, so if you want an engine without it, you can swap in an LS1 or LS2 or LS3.

The excuse of it getting in the way just shows how lazy some people are.
