HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

I have everything changed and the car will run it just makes a loud squeeling noise and i'm pretty sure it can't be the belt. It never did that before. I'm wondering if its the cam? I lubed it all with assembly lube etc why would it be doing that? Its like "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" ALl i did was changed to Vortec heads/ Comp cams cam/lifters/ New comp cams valve springs/ retainers/locks. It just squeels and makes me very nervous as an engine should not be doing this.... any ideas?

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

What cam did you use? Did it turn over freely by hand when you lashed the valves before starting?

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

Yes it turned over perfectly ok, Could it possibly be my power steering? I forgot to fill it (it should have nothing in it) would that make a noise like that? and i used A comp cams Cam. Heres the link to it..... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

I pulled off the belt and the noise is still there, Its really loud. Has to be the cam cause it makes that noise all the time.... I'll take a video and post it. It sounds like a freakin die grinder.

I was thinking the same thing, did you by any chance install a double roller timing set with a roller cam and forget to clearance it?

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

That's probably it. The double roller chain is wider than the stock link chain, and now it's rubbing on the bosses around the oil galley plugs. You can clearance the block with a die grinder if you're careful and make sure you catch all the chips.

they normally make contact at the very top 12 o'clock position of the boss around the top oil galley plug there, which is where you normally need to clearance it. Hopefully that's all it is and you'll get away cheap

Not sure to tell you the truth, if it were me I'd start taking it apart and inspect everything as I go, lifters, pushrods, rockers, cam lobes and bearing surfaces etc.

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

Distributor gear not lining up to the cam? Oilpump? Sounds like something rotating fast and stopping when you let of the gas alittle.. Cam maybe pushing to much against the rear of the motor?

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

I just don't understand how it could do this when all i did was change the cam and intake and timing chain set. I didn't think i did anything wrong, it all went in fine. but according to the noise apparently not.

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

Someone list off anything i could have screwed up changing the heads/cam/and timing set that could possibly make that noise. I'll make a checklist and go through it next time i take the motor apart to figure it out. Thanks a lot so far guys!

Also why are there two holes in the back of the camshaft? whats that for? And it seems like when its running it whines like hell but it goes away for a sec when i get on the throttle.... any ideas?

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

well i dont know if this would cause your noise or not, but seeing as you have a roller block and you are using a flat tappet cam, did you install the cam and use a thrust bearing? Im not sure if it goes before or after the retaining plate, but for flat tappet cams there is supposed to be a thrust bearing used.

If the thing is making that much noise, it's got to be noticeable at some point when you turn it over by hand. Keep checking everything at every step when you put it back together.

I'm kind of grasping at straws here, any pictures of the backside of the timing cover and the timing set you're using?

You don't use a retaining plate either.

Re: HELP!!! Cam swap problems...

the area where the retaining plate would go on a roller cam setup around the front cam bearing looks like it's kind of shiney, but I can't really tell from the picture, there isn't anything rubbing there when it's all assembled is there? Just throwing it out there..

I can't really tell but at the top it looks like there's a little metal flake kind of hanging off (straight down from the middle galley plug slighly offset to the right) and on my screen it kind of looks like it's gouged a little.. hard to tell from the quality of the pictures though.. probably just my imagination but I figured I'd throw it out there for him to take a closer look in person.. not really seeing anything else..
