Re: Harmonic Balancers

You want an internally balanced one if your engine is internally balanced, and an externally balanced one if your engine is externally balanced. Getting the wrong one is a Bad Thing. A stock type balancer should be fine for the occasional excursion up to 6,500.

Re: Harmonic Balancers

External balance is for a stroker (400 crank) engine like 383 or 400.
Measure the outside diameter, if it's 6 3/4" get one like THIS.
Or if you have more money than brains, get one like THIS.
This would probably be a pretty good one..

Both my 305 and 355 have balancers behind the crank pulley.

Re: Harmonic Balancers

All small block chevys have a balancer. The presence of the balancer has nothing do to with whether the engine is internally or externally balanced.

Re: Harmonic Balancers

i got a romac balancer for my 383. its smaller than stock diameter balancers and its good to over 6500 so far. i've been to 6800 on the limiter and no problems so far

Fits well with factory 2 oclock pointers. You can get them on ebay for 250 bucks

Re: Harmonic Balancers

fluidampr is good. if the motor hasnt been balanced, then i'm not sure what i'd do there. all internals should be roughly balanced else you'll have vibrations inside and hurt your rpm range. Also wears harder on the bearings if not balanced properly

without knowing what is inside of that motor its hard to say what balancer is necessary. some rotating assemblies are external balanced setup some are internal, but i dont think you can mix them up.

You need an internal or "neutral" (same thing) balancer.

The engine takes a 6-3/4" balancer.
Those are available in 6" and 7". and the 7" won't fit...

geez, you just WANT to spend big money?
Go to summit, and grab their $59 one. It's got all the timing marks, and works great.
