383 parts?
I plan on putting a zz383 into my '86 IROC-Z when i return from my "vacation" in iraq. I was curious as to what parts off my stock 305 that i will be able to re-use and what parts i should upgrade. I plan on using the TPI and just getting some larger fuel injectors. I also plan on putting my MSD ignition on the new motor as well. Also would it be possible to use the 700R4 i have or upgrade that as well. Thank you.

Well depends on block, but heres what i'm reusing: oil pan, motor mounts, oil filter, (maybe waterpump), pulley system, brackets, rebuilding, oil sender unit, water thermostat housing and buffing up tranny is a must!

Re: 383 parts?
700r4 will live behind it for awhile as long as your not beating it down at the strip alot or even on the street.
like above said, thats all you can pretty much reuse, but some things like waterpump and oil pan you may need or want to replace. oil pan is nice to upgrade for more oil and better stroker clearance. waterpump is nice to get a higher volume flowing one to keep things cool
get the radiator cleaned out good before installing new motor

Re: 383 parts?
I have a rebuilt TH400 in my garage with a brand new tci converter but its from a truck, so its too short. i planned on rebuilding the tranny if i was to reuse the 700R4

You can reuse everything except the block, crank and pistons. Upgrading the rods would be a good idea, and the 305 heads are going to bring your compression way up, so they should probably be replaced. Apart from that, headers and some induction system besides TPI are a must.

Re: 383 parts?
I was wondering the same thing except for using my L98 350. If I re-use the conn rods will I need a small base cam and if I go that route wont I need longer push rods? I thought there was a problem with using stock rods and clearance with the cam, I knew the block needs to be notched just not sure about the cam.
Thanks

Re: 383 parts?
There may or may not be clearance problems between the cam and stock rods.

Re: 383 parts?
i was thinking about picking up a crate engine from gm performance parts. so i wouldnt even use my old engine. what about using the edlebrock headers that i put on my 305. would those fit on a new crate motor?
