should I buy this 1990 IROC-Z w/ 5.7L

Hello All,

I am looking at a 1990 IROC-Z. It's an L98 5.7L w/ the G92 performace package.....I may be able to buy it for $3,950....

The good:

1) only 86,000 original miles
2) the body is straight and the paint is in very nice shape all the way around
3) it appears to be completely original
4) clean car fax report
5) only a two owner car
6) great price
7) Heater core and intake gasket were replaced in 2003
8) The car has passed emissions each and every time according to the car fax report up to late 2004 when the last time it was on the road
9) Very well documented receipts of repairs to the car.
10) A/C works fine and converted to R134A about 10 years ago
11) Interior is clean and the desirable black & gray interior.
12) Power everything including the rear hatch
13) G92 performance package

The bad:

1) This looks like it's been an Illinois car it's whole life which means there are some rust issues.
2) There is rust on the drivers rear quarter panel around the lip of the car
3) The car looks like it sat outside in the sun for a long time and the black trim like the seat belts and other parts of the interior appear to be somewhat sun bleached.
4) The drivers side seat track appears to be broken and the seat leans to the left.
5) There is alot of scaly surface rust underneath and the floors appear to be somewhat soft
6) There is a fairly substantial oil leak coming from what appears to be the rear main seal.
7) There is more wheel hop than usual when accelerating from a stop on the r/r
8) It needs to have the exhaust system replaced
9) I could tell it definitely has a brake caliper sticking.
10) The arm rests need replacing.
11) Cracked dash pad
12) Fuel tank sending unit is bad which means gas gauge doesn't work
13) Rust/bubbling in the passenger door jam area where it meets the rocker panel & quarter panel corner

I am debating whether to buy this car or not. I know they only made 2,415 of these cars with the 5.7L and maybe less with both the G80 and G92. But the car has issues. Is it worth it for lets say $3,900 or $3,800 or should I keep looking and find one with less rust issues for 8 or 9 grand? Keep in mind that NADA high retail value for these cars is only $5G at this time.

Here is a link to a slide show with 20 photos of the car http://s523.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=e491de78.pbw

I also posted a poll.

If there wasn't any rust and it was in a little better condition it would be worth it in my opinion, but the fact that it does have some problems + Rust, it is only worth about $1,500 because of the rust. But it may be different because I live in Cali in a basically rust free environment.

That is just my opinion though.

Re: should I buy this 1990 IROC-Z w/ 5.7L

I would say that it is overpriced. The oil leak and rust are major draw backs in my opinion. I always have a hard time believing the 86k original miles, I always think it has 186k or the odometer has stopped working at some point like mine... 108k for the last 5 years ... I agree that somewhere around $1500 would be fair. Just my

Re: should I buy this 1990 IROC-Z w/ 5.7L

I`d see if I could get it cheaper.Of coarse I live in the south and once I fixed the rust I wouldnt have to worry about it again. The oil leak is no big deal in my opinion. Most cars that are 20 years old will have an oil leak on the original engine.the seats and interior problems seem minimal to me.It still seems overpriced because of the rust. That stuff in the door jam looks like a big problem to me.The exhaust system would be changed anyway if I bought it.What all kinda work does your 69 need?

If the floorpan is compromised in any way then I would stay away from it.

Re: should I buy this 1990 IROC-Z w/ 5.7L

thats way over priced,,, I live in chicago and I probably look every or every other day for camaros and transams to part or buy for my fiance(she jealous of the time I spend with mine so Ill get her one for herself, so I can have more time...muwha, ha ,ha ) Ive seen tons of better cars for $2000 than that, the low mileage is nice but if everything was taken care of or wear items replaced who cares if its got 150k miles on... My trans am has 143k with no rust, rear end with 80k on it, trans rebuilt with 3k miles on it, and a rebuilt 305 tpi, Ive got $4,100 into everything right now...
