Tranny doesn't shift but it's not the tranny

I have a 1987 Iroc-Z with the 700R4. One day, driving along the car slowed down and wouldn't go faster than 30mph or shift past second gear. I thought it was the transmission so my family helped me replace the tranny with a rebuilt 700R4. What happens when we're done and test drive it? Same symptoms, which means it wasn't the tranny's fault. I have been told that it just needs a new catalytic converter but I need to be sure before I spend any more money on it.

exhaust could have alot to do with speed if its clogged, you cant get air into the motor if you cant get it back out, try taking your y pipe off at your manifolds and see if it runs any better, or you could even take your o2 sensor and see if runs any better, also they make a back pressure tester that you thread into your o2 sensor bung before the converter and it will tell you it if is clogged

Check your cat its probably clogged I had a car do that to me once, it wouldn't rev past 3000 RPM and would only do like 40 MPH, as soon as I cut cat off it ran fine.

i believe u can just idle the car at around 3000rpms for maybe a minute and if his temperature jumps to the red or the cat under the car is glowing from heat then its the cat

Did any of you watch the video? I uploaded it to help you all find the problem.

Dunno if it's just me, but watching the video I think there may be some merit to the clogged cat that everyone is saying to check. Whenever you revved the engine, it just seemed like something was missing in the sound; like the intensity of the exhaust note didn't change much when you went from 1k to 3k.

Re: Tranny doesn't shift but it's not the tranny

I found a whistling noise, it goes on and off and sounds like it's coming from a vacuum hose. My question is should I replace all the vacuum hoses since they're old? Do I not need a new catalytic converter if this is the main problem?

Also I was revving it up to 3k today and the rpms were dying when I had my foot on the accelerator.

You don't need a cat the car will run fine without it, the cat is mostly just for emissions.

Re: Tranny doesn't shift but it's not the tranny

Try taking off the cat and check to see if something is clogged in there and look at the intermediate pipe to see if something is not stuck inside.

My boss had a similar problem with his Subaru and what is was one cat blew apart and got stuck in the back one.

Don't worry about the smog police just disconnect the exhaust system and take for a quick run to see if it help if it does then you know it is something to do with the exhaust.
