proper oil pan removal procedure?

i have to replace my oil pan cause the chrome one likes to leak everywhere. my last attempt to remove my pan i had to use a engine hoist, and i had to lift the engine so high it was about to hit the firewall just to get pan to clear. is that normal or am i doin something wrong?

You need to lift the engine no matter how you do it, but you can turn the crank so the counterweights aren't in the way and you don't have to lift it so high.
