I am continuing to try to get my 1990 305 TPI tuned and able to pass Virginia emissions. I am having the following issues:

I get no ALDL data at all (not even a code 12) when I jump the ALDL

My timing is retarded by about 10 degrees (at 12 oclock); jumps around 2 to 3 degrees at 750 rpm idle speed

My SES light NEVER comes on--not even at start up

I can easily smell that my car is running very rich

I replaced the 02 sensor with a GM sensor, replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor. Used GM top end cleaner, etc.

The car idles fine and seems to perform *okay* for a 305. It will still not pass emissions though and the lack of ALDL data baffles me--as does the timing being so off. I can adjust the timing but suspect all of this might be related and that might not be the real problem.

Does anyone have any wisdom on what to check to see why I am having these issues?

 

Change the bulb? It was probably removed by the P/O that didn't want to fix the car if it still "ran".
