How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
I can not get those little orange clips that are holding the spring in place off.. I got the spring compressed as much as possible.. its becoming a pain now.. What do i do? And are these little things available at auto stores just in case one breaks or i lose it?

Is the head still on the car? Maybe valve is moving. The locks usually arent kept in stock.
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Yeah.. the head is in the car.. Valve isnt moving too much.. How do these things work? do i have to push the spring down after its compressed? Once i get used to a technique.. itll all be easier. lol.

Beat the retainer with a hammer to break the locks free before you put the spring compressor on.
How are you going to keep the valve from falling into the cylinder after you take the springs out?

I finally got it.. I put alot of pressure on it and it broke free and came out.. Im using nylon rope.. Its working amazing so far.
I came across another problem.. Which side is the exhaust and which side is the intake?

Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Springs are the same both intake and exhaust. The thick rotator/retainers are on the exhaust side but the spring pockets are sunk deeper in the head to compensate for the extra rotator/retainer thickness. Locks are the same both intake and exhaust.
The valves on the head go like this (either head, regardless of whether you're looking front-to-back or back-to-front):
E I I E E I I E

didnt know that.. I knew the 1st one was exhaust. How come the exhaust seals wont go on easily? Is there a trick or something involved? i already broke 1 exhaust seal.. Its those hard plastic ones

I was going to wait until tomorrow but maybe i could get some replies until then so i could be good to go tomorrow morning.
Like i said above.. The exhaust seals are being a real pain to get on.. How do these work anyway? 1 actually snapped under pressure.. I dont want to break anymore.
Also, Whats the prodecure on getting everything back together.. Do i put the o-ring on first before i put the spring back on or put the spring on first and put the o-ring on then the retainers?
How do i adjust the rockers?

They're pretty self-explanatory. I don't know how someone could break one.
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Are the exhaust seals suppose to go all the way down or are they suppose to rest under the second groove? It wont go past the second grove at all.

What brand and part number are you using?

Factory doesn't use those white umbrellas seals. They use the o-rings on the valve stem (o-ring goes on the bottom groove, locks on the upper groove) and either NOTHING on the valve guide boss (earlier heads), or a rubber-type positive seal (mid-upper 80s style heads) on the valve guide boss. Never umbrella seals from the factory.
Doesn't mean they won't work, but the factory never used exactly that style seal.
Yes, installing the rubber o-rings is a royal pain in the rear. You must shove them down into their groove AFTER you compress the spring and retainer down and then let them up to capture the o-ring inside the retainer. If you put the o-ring in place and then compress the spring and retainer it will just shove the o-ring out of it's groove (or tear it up completely) and render it worthless.
Want my advice? Install the umbrella seals (or better yet, get the proper rubber positive seals) and forget about the o-rings.

The reason those seals are hard to get past your second groove, is a burr, You will have to dress the valves with a file or emery. Sometimes you can wiggle the seal over the burr. You should be using a positive stop viton seal on the intakes, and those hard umbrellas on exhaust only.
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
I got the rubber ones for the intake side and the hard plastic for exhaust.
The o-ring thing looks hella hard to do.. Whats the best way to bypass the o-ring if there is any?
I was thinking about just putting intake seals on everything

You need the o-ring. It is the best way to keep oil out of the valve stem area. Very easy to install if you do it right. Compress the spring and insert the o ring from the top, into the second groove, then put the keepers in. Intake seals are not rated for the heat the exhaust will see and will fall apart very quickly.
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Ok.. I discovered something.. i pulled the first intake spring off and there was no seal.. And a small piece of o-ring.. Isn't there suppose to be a seal on the intake side? If there is.. then i probably found my problem on why my exhaust smokes after a minute of idling..

I've got tens of thousands of miles on Fel-Pro viton intake seals on the exhaust valves on several engines. If you're worried about it though, you can use a different material.
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Im using felpro intake seals on exhaust too.. I just feel much more safe with those ones then the umbrella ones.. So far so good.. 2 valves down 14 to go!
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Just pulled off intake #2 and this one didnt have a seal either.. Are there suppose to be seals on these from the factory?

Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Are you sure you're on the intake valves?
Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
Yeah.. I've pulled 3 so far.. 1 exhaust and 2 intake.. None had any seals and the o ring was shattered into 1000 pieces.. kinda weird..
But maybe this explains my whole problem.. The car exhaust begins to smoke after about 30-60 seconds..

I don't quite understand why to put the o-rings on after putting in a superior seal, but the instructions say to, and it's not like they hurt anything, so on they go.
Bend a paper clip in a ring shape to stuff the o-ring down there. Works great.

Re: How do you remove those little orange clips on valve spring?
It was hard enough to put the o rings in the first groove.. lol.. I gave up and just didnt use them
I'm still tripping on how the intake valves didnt have a seal on them.. I can see why my brand new spark plugs were layered in oil after 10 mins of running now
Got 3 done in 1 day.. lol. Hopefully tomorrow i can get atleast the remaining 5 done on the driver side and have that side done with.. Its become alittle easier now.. Its just this damn spring compresser i got is the biggest piece of crap ever.. its always popping off the springs and bending.. It probably wont even make another 5 springs
