First engine build need help
This will be my first engine build and need to know if i am on the right track or heading to the wall, plan is to build a 400 sbc for a daily driver with a little bite, new scat crank, scat 5.7 rods, kieth black hypereutectic pistons with a -18 dish, 993 heads, either weiand steath or edelbrock dual plane intake, 750 vac sec holley, hooker comp headers. Not sure on what cam to use, putting 323 gears out back and using a 350 turbo trans for now with around a 2600 or 2800 stall. Looking for the torque and push at least 300 hp to the wheels and the body is being strenghened, 86 camaro. Need help with a cam and anyother tips or advice is greatly welcomed thanks.

with a 400 it shouldn't be too difficult to get 300HP. try lunati voodoo camshafts, i hear good things about them, or comp cams. forget the edelbrock intake, go with the stealth. good heads could be like the 195 cc AFR eliminators, or the 210cc. i hear plenty good about them. some 1.6 ratio roller rocker arms would increase your lift as well.

Re: First engine build need help
I used the 270 Extreme Enegry cam in my 406, with SportsmanII heads (220/64cc). I wouldn't recommend that cam as I feel the dual pattern styles are better for SBCs. Something like a 224I 230E or a little more, there are lots of good cams out there just pick one that suits the compression and use of the engine.Try the Victor Jr intake...you'll like it!

yeah, the 993s will be dead by 5000 rpm. With those pistons you could probably run the Vortec heads. Or if you're using those 993 heads, get a 12cc dish instead.
TH350 means you're giving up both acceleration and fuel economy, so I assume you already have an excellent TH350, or you're not convinced about the 700R-4. I'd suggest looking at www.700R4.com And with 993s, I'd suggest a cam like Comp's DualEnergy265 and a 2000 stall, and the PainlessWiring harness for lockup with the 700. With the Vortecs I'd step up to the DE275, and a 2400 stall.
But build it to suit you. You should get 20 mpg with the 700 and the 265 cam. the 3.23 and a 700 wouldn't be too much first gear. a strong, low-end-torque-built 355 with 700 and 3.73:1 is about perfect.
