What can you tell me...

Hey guys, so... i know my share about engine modification etc etc, but i don't know anything about ignitions and such. And i mean anything. I have a 1984 camaro z28, with a 350 dropped in, its a older 4 barreled carburated motor. What can you guys tell me about ignitions etc, i don't know anything about them. I considered dropping a 1991 350 TPI motor into it for 600$, but i'm reconsidering because i don't like messing with computerized stuff, i'm from central wyoming and don't have any kind of performance tuning shop within 600 miles of me. I figured i could just save up and build the motor i have, bore, stroke, heads, cam, intake, etc, what do you guys think?

I wouldn't upgrade to that TPI motor. The wiring and sensors would be a nightmare.
I'd just spend the cash fixing your current engine (anything wrong?) or buying performance parts, like headers, converter, etc

Re: What can you tell me...

I was thinking the same thing. Nothing is wrong with the motor, but its had problems before. I bought it back in march, then 3-4 weeks later i wasn't getting ANY power, and had a really bad back fire through the carb, so i tore it down to find the problem, it was the cam shaft, i had the intake lobes on 4 and....6? i think, completely stripped away, the lifters were all messed up on those lobes, chipped and concaved. I replaced the camshaft and lifters with a reeaaaallly mild edelbrock camshaft, i then had vaccum leaks like you wouldn't believe, i went back through and fixed those, it runs like a raped ape nowadays. but i think my tranny is messed up but thats a different problem. I want to bore and stroke to a 383, then put AFR 195 cc heads on if i can, with either a comp cams camshaft, or lunati voodoo camshafts, headers, RR arms (1.6 ratio), havn't decided on the intake manifold or carb yet though, any help?

The stock carb is big enough. The main problem would be finding an intake with spreadbore carb mounting to support it. However, a spreadbore Performer RPM would do the job.

The computer ignition on the carb'd cars just need an aftermarket ignition module and coil to be up to the task.

You'd just have to keep the cam tame enough to not drive the computer bonkers (but that isn't hard).

Re: What can you tell me...

okay thanks five7, another question, would the stock carburator be enough for NO2? i'm thinking a 125-150 shot? so does my camaro have a computer ignition? its a 84 Z28 with originally a 305HO.
you say keep the cam tame enough, do you mean with mild specs? cause i was ganna get something fairly hardcore lol

Re: What can you tell me...

if your going to run ove a 100hp shot its a good idea to use a dedicated fuel pump for the system, and you should have at a minimum forged pistons, if not fully forged rotating assembly if you plan on spraying it alot. and be sure to run a stage or two colder plug and you need to retard your timing 2degrees for every 50hp shot you use!
hope this helps!!!!!!!

I'm going to be using a eagle rotating assembly, all forged with a CR of 10.3:1 i think. okay, on retarding my timing, which way would i turn it? clockwise or counter clockwise?

you need to turn the distributor clockwise to retard the timing, and the eagle rotating assy. will be a good choice!!!!!!!!!!!
