1990 IROC-Z vs 1992 Mustang GT

Well, there's this girl that wants to race me... so I'm wondering...

'90 IROC-Z, 305cid TPI, 700R4, FlowMaster muffler w/ High Flow Catback, K&Ns, Gutted Airbox... vs '92 Mustang GT, 302cid, 5-spd...

I know that stock for stock, the IROC should win, but I am worried about her having the 5-spd, because she knows how to shift good.... she also has a weight advatange, but I dunno... I think it will be really close...

If I win, she has to kiss me... and if she wins, I have to kiss her... so the stakes are high, lol

What do you all think?

I really don't think a stock 305 Iroc will beat a stock 5.0 mustang, hell even a stock 350 Iroc would probably lose. With your mods you might have a chance if she doesn't know how to launch but seeing that you have a auto 305 my money is on her!

well even if you are ahead back out of the throttle and then give her some tongue at the finish line
but really. i dunno much about the 92 5.0 but i think you can give him a decent run. my 87 305 just barely lost to a 90 5.0 lx with gears and headers. they guy took a little time to shift so it could have been different if he could shift.

I think she will get you by a little bit. If you had a 350 id give it to you. Either way 350 or 305 it will be close.

Are you guys serious?

I thought for sure it would be a neck 'n neck race... and what's this about a 5.7 losing too? You gotta be kidding me... are those GTs that fast stock?!!

I thought the TPI system was great for off the line racing, and just lousy at top end?

The kissing will stay on the lips... lol

Thanks guys

Well, don't know how many mustangs you guys have raced, but, I'd have to bet on the IROC. I've ripped many GT's in my day, I ripped a modded 91 LX 5.0 and once I pulled up beside a late 80s GT at a light. The guy sounded like it was hella modded and had about 20 racing stickers on the back window, he even had the street slicks on the back and two inch wide tires on the front. I kinda hesitated to race him, I thought I'd lose, but when he gunned it I pulled up beside him and then passed him and cut back in front. I also ripped every kind of new GT you can think of, but that's not saying much. Oh, my car is modded, but only slightly, I think you've got a chance. Either way ur gonna win.

Hey IROCthe 5.7L, that pic of your car looks good. Are your headlights tinted or is that just the shadow?

alright here's my take on it all..305 auto vs. 302 5 spd stang= one dead IROC. 305 5 speed vs. 302 5 spd stang=a camaro or bird limping home. And a 350 auto vs 302 5 spd stang= a close race and will come down to who can drive and hook up better. I think unless this girl can't drive to save her life then you're going to be going home with a loss.. But not really since you get to kiss the chick..I say whatever happens you still win unless she has oral herpes or something...

One more thing too, you can't just look at stats. These cars are old. A well maintained IROC vs a Beaten worn out 5.0 engine would defenetly win.

Maybe she beats her car and changes the oil once every 5 years

True but assuming both cars are in good tune the 5.0 stang is going to win 9 out of 10 times against a 305 camaro or bird...If this girl can drive my money is on the stang banger..as hard as it is to say sometimes..hehe

It's actually a story as to how this all came to be....

A couple months ago, I was at a Chevron getting some gas, I had just washed the car and everything so I was hangin while the pump did it's thing...

All of a sudden, this black 92 Mustang GT swings into the lot... and I watch it pull up to the pump right across from me, pretty good lookin car... driver's side door opens, and sure enough, it's the chick...

I knew who she was instantly, cuz she went to the same high school as me....she had even been at a couple of the same parties I was at. I had heard about her GT, but I had never seen it till now. She had a rep as being a racer girl, so I was naturally curious....

As she gets out, right away she is looking at me and my car. I wasn't sure if she recognized me or not cuz I had a cap on, but she goes inside to pay the clerk. Meanwhile, I'm still checkin out her car and I see a couple guys in the passanger seats, and they inturn, are lookin at me and talking to each other (obviously about my car, probably wanting to show me up when they leave)...

The girl comes back out, and starts puttin gas in her car, still glancing over at me. By this time I am done tankin' up, and am feeling kinda bold, so I walk over to her....turns out she did recongnize me, so we talk a little bit (that's how I found out she had a stock 5-spd) and it comes to be we had a couple mutual friends, which is how we ended up getting in contact again to set up this race...lol...

Anyway, finally I'm wanting to leave, so I get back into my car, fire it up, give it a few revs to get that new gas flowing, throw it in [Drive]...and head out. As I exit the lot, I give it some gas and spin the tires and that was that!!

So, that's how I got into this sticky situation, she just wants a very friendly race for fun, I'm not even sure if she was serious about the "winner gets kissed" thing....but I'll find out

Wish me luck, we're racin' friday night...

If u had a 350 TPI u would win. Since its a 305 TPI against that, I'm gonna have to go with the other car here.

Stock vs. stock, my bet is on the Mustang also. The 305 TPI was rated at 210 hp, the 5.0 at 225. Weight advantage goes to the Stang. Mustangs typically launch a little better than f-bodies. F-bodies generally take about 20-30 more hp to match a Mustang's time in the 1/4 mile. If she can drive, she's the winner. Your best bet is if she gets a poor launch. A 350 would make it close, but then it comes down to the driver.

Actually I think a 90' 305 had 230 HP and they both had the same torque, so the stang would still probably win.

A guy at work used to have an auto '93 Mustang. He ran a 15.5 at the track.

The '93 stangs were rated at less power, although in actuality that is suspect, but a 15.5 is horrible. A well tuned Stock Stang should go 14.5-14.9 and if she is a good driver watch out. I'd put my money on her, but in the end a street race is all about driving ability.

Okay this is the way *I* see things as far as third gen Camaros Vs 5.0 fox body Mustangs go.

The 85-90 305 TPI's will likely lose to fox bod 5.0's. The 90-92 5 speed 305 TPI's though, with the added HP, may be able to take some of the AOD 5.0's and give the 5 speeds a close run, but I would still take the 5 speed Stang.

As far as 87-90 350 TPI's, I think they would probably beat an AOD 5.0, but I think a 5 speed 5.0 would be a close race, with a slight advantage going to the Mustang, but depending on the drivers, it's a close one. Then you have the 91-92 350 TPI's with speed density, they have 245 HP, so I think the would beat a 5.0 AOD 99% of the time if both are in good running order. A 91-92 350 TPI vs. a 5 speed 5.0 stang would be very close, with the advantage going to the 350 TPI, but it's still gonna be close.

Here's my take on the whole race. This obviously isn't about Mustang vs. Camaro...it's about Boy wants girl. SO....I would lose the race. Afterwards, walk up to her and tell her "Well, i guess I owe you a kiss..how bout tonight after I take you to dinner on me?" See...now she has the upper hand because she "won" and now you have to cater to her for the night. At dinner, if you can pull off a perfect night...you are all set!

Damnit... I thought it would be a close race with me winning by a fender...

I didn't know these GT Stangs were that quick with the stock 5-spd... and she knows how to shift, so I'm in trouble then...

I'll still race her

Thanks guys

I was waiting for someone to post something like that!

It's funny, cuz usually a race is just that... a race, even if it's "guy vs girl", but this one adds a little spice to it, which is why I wanted to post and see what you all had to say, lol.

Good advice from the guys!

Well, tonight is the night I get my *** handed to me

I actually think I'll give her a good run, cuz I've got the A4 and even though she is good at shifting, she's not a pro.... 1 little slip up, and I've got her!

The funny this is, he came to work with the lettering still on the windows, proud I guess. This was a couple years ago, when I had my Mustang. Man I miss that car.

dont forget that the 92 GT only had 205hp and around 280lbs torque so it might be a real close race just depends on how well she can drive

the 1992 GT had 225 HP and the 93 was rated at 205 to make the cobra look like it was alot more powerful when in fact the mustang GT's and LX's still made 225 HP.

Sorry it's taken me a couple days to respond here, got all caught up with Christmas, but the race DID go down, and here is what happened:

We met up at our old high school parking lot late friday night, and then drove out to this strip that runs along the nearby intl airport and golf course... really the only stretch of road that is deserted in my city and long enough for me to do 125mph runs on...

It had rained lightly about an hour before we met up, so as we were driving, I was thinkin about how the roads might be a little slick, worrying about traction problems etc... it was also the first time I had ever cruised with a Mustang, but that was kinda cool.

So, we get out there, and she wants to see my car upclose, under the hood and all... she asked alot of questions, we probably spent 10 minutes giving each other tours of the cars, then it was time...

We lined em up, made sure we both agreed the front ends were equal... rolled the windows down, I wish we had someone there to flag us off, but oh well... I counted down... 3... 2... 1...

We both exploded off the line, my front end lifted up about 3 inches as the car shifted, (gotta love the torque on these cars!), I gave it 3/4 punch for a split second (to make sure I wasn't gonna spin and slide), then floored the son of a bitch.... watched the RPMs surge, then down shift over the roar of the flows

By the time I was able to glance over at her, I had her by 1/2 my car, her front end was lined with my door! Each time she shifted, the car would slip back a little, then she would start pulling on me... shift again, fall back a little, and so on....

I finally got past that awful 3rd gear, and screamed into 4th, and that's when she started to recover. That 5-spd caught me and she crept past me, both of us at around 90+mph... she won...

We pulled over at the end of the road, and she was practically jumping up and down with joy, made me laugh. It was a really fun race, pretty close too.... it turns out her tires had 30% tread on em, so that would explain why I had her off the line so bad, but she fought her way past me, so I gotta hand it to her

And as for the kiss, it was very sweet

The back seat of a Mustang is too small to do anything in Not that I know from experience or anything

Sounds like a hell of a race man...did you score a date out of it afterwards?

There;s a Back seat in a Mustang? All this time i just thought it was a storage shelf? I am 6'1"..so my seat is all he way back and there is ZERO leg room behind me. Most of my friends are the same so 95% of the time my car is a 2-seater. I have only sat someone in the backseat 3 or times...and never had 4 people in it.

Actually, i have never sat in the back seat myself...gotta try that

What all this about not enough room? You guys are doing it all wrong. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. If she hits her head you can take the tops out. Problem solved. By the way this is one of the best threads ever.
