Picking a cam for my 85 Z28

So in a previous post I stated my situation. Just acquired a 85 Z28 on a trade and it is quit the project. I am in the process of getting the engine all torn apart because of a blown head gasket not sure how it happened because the car had been sitting in a barn for more then a year so a long story short I was told that I should replace the Cam shaft also. I don't know much about cams except for how they work the basic operations and all. So through reading on this site and various other sites these are the two that I have come up with that might work. The engine is a stock 305 with 5 speed I will be running the stock quadrajet 4bbl carb with stock intake manifold. The first choice is this one: Crane Cams Part # 114112 - Compucam Hydraulic Lifter Camshaft/Lifter Kit: RPM 800-4400; Adv. Dur. 254 Int./264 Exh.; Valve Lift .401 Int./.423 Exh.; Lobe 104 Deg.; Includes Cam; Lifter; Locking Plate.

Or Choice 2: Crane Cams Part # 114122 - Compucam Hydraulic Lifter Camshaft/Lifter Kit: RPM 1200-4800; Adv. Dur. 264 Int./274 Exh.; Valve Lift .423 Int./.446 Exh.; Lobe 110 Deg.; Includes Cam; Lifter; Locking Plate.

Now with either of these choices what else would I have to buy to make sure my engine doesn't blow up a couple thousand miles down the road?

Re: Picking a cam for my 85 Z28

That depends. First, do you have dished pistons or flat tops? I know others will disagree with me, but if dished, go for the smaller cam, and a set of stock replacement valve springs. If flat top, choose the larger cam, and get a set of generic "Z28/LT-1 valve springs. When replacing a cam, you need to install new lifters. Be sure to get some ZDDP additive for your first batch of oil.
And while you're at it, this would be the perfect time to trash the factory intake manifold. If you have smog testing, the Weiand 8000 has the legality info cast right onto the front of it. Your other choices are the GM ZZ4 10185063 intake, and the Edelbrock Performer EGR 3701. Prices are under $200 to your door for any one of these. Good luck with the project!
