Heres the deal, I know for a fact that i have been able to change out the pump shaft on other SBC with the motor in the car. are there aftermaket shaft that a skinnier so that i can avoid taking off the pan to put the factory rod back in? any tips or suggestions on this?

Should only go in with the oil pump. I.E., from the bottom.

Re: oil pump shaft

They only go in from the bottom. The collar is too big to drop in from above.

Now, a stock shaft you CAN do from the top but ONLY if the plastic collar has already been installed on the oil pump input shaft stub already. Otherwise, it won't fit from above either.

Sorry, but I think you're hosed.
