300hp need ideas

Storing my car for about 4-5 months soon and I want to put some upgrades in it. The engine is a stock 5.7 Liter TPI with K&N airfilters and 3 1/2 inch catback exhaust. I am removing the cat but that does little power increase. Anyways I want my car to be around 300hp in the spring and I want to know the upgrades I should do to make that come true. Im getting headers for sure but idk what to get from there. I plan on adding more power with the next two years but 300 is the range I want for the spring thats affordable. It can be more than 300 but i want 290-300 to be minimum.

Thanks,
Kevin

cam, 1.6 rockers, bigger injectors, good tune = 300+ ponies

Re: 300hp need ideas

is this at the wheels or on motor generally?

stock motors are about 240-250 hp on motor depending on year. rated 230 on some cars but they put out abit more than that. Being the first year 87 L98, its probly 240

with exhaust its probly 250 or so.

To get near 300 on motor you will need new TPI setup... big mouth type base and larger runners...preferably SLP semi siamesed. If you can find one get a Superam. IF emissions arent a concern, ditch TPI for a stealth ram.

Get headers and tune it and its gonna make near 300hp on motor

To get it at the wheels your looking at all the above plus a decent cam. Should really look into heads with that cam to make a nice 300whp+ but full bolt on L98 with tune and a mild cam should be near 275-290whp depending on cam. Not bad. You should beable to reach 300 with even more cam and a miniram/hsr type setup

what motor is in it now? does it have a different cam or compression? what heads are on it?

Need to know what you have now to see where you need to go

Its a 350 Crate GM factory 5.7 Liter engine. The engine has been untouched but I am not sure which HP rating on it is.

Ill check this weekend if I can get to it. My paper work just says a 350 GM Crate 5.7 Liter engine. I have raced the car and it ran a 15.2 88mph 1/4 mile.

Re: 300hp need ideas

oh yeah? well thats a start. mph seems alittle lower than what i'd expect for a 350 motor. Most bone stock L98's run 93-95 mph, some reporting to hit 96-98. my car did 97-98 with headers/catback, and gutted filter box with k/ns

sounds like you have 200-220 hp and its gonna be harder to get to 300 with just bolt ons. But i dont know of any 220 ish hp crates. Could be a 260hp motor crate that they sell often. low compression small cam and no accessories. With accessories and TPI, its dropping down to 220 ish hp so its abit less than a L98. I'd bet thats what you have. But do check

The car was also having problems with air flow and got up to 88mph and stayed slowly increased but 0-60 was amazing. Im getting high 5's and low 6's

Re: 300hp need ideas

I just want the car to be faster than it is right now. rolling from 30mph and flooring it is not impressive really and I know the car has the power inside it I just want to let it out. I want the most HP for about 1500 to 2000k for the start of spring and another 1000 maybe for the summer.

Re: 300hp need ideas

with that budget you can get alot done if you shop around right.

This is still a TPI car right running original ECM/TPI? I bet a good tune will release some power out of that car.

but in the long run, definately consider heads/cam swap. And possibly changing from TPI if you can get away with it. Superram for emissions or else you got to got to go HSR/Miniram and not be smog legal

But with some of the stuff you can do with TPI these days, you can get alot out of it, just takes some work. Fully ported and siamesed TPI setups can hang with the best of them, but takes more time/work and possibly money

you can get some more fun out of it with a torque converter... 2800 stall in my L98 worked great and really made the car a blast to drive from slow rpm roll speeds.

But like i said, start by finding out whats in that motor now, and work from there to decide how much power you need/how fast you want to go

Sounds like either the 260 horse crate or LO5 crate. In which case 300 HP measured the same way as the stock 230 HP is going to be a little difficult to obtain because of the poor heads. But, Holley Stealth Ram, cam upgrade, headers, exhaust should get you pretty close.

I really cant afford to do the cam right now and my 300hp was just estimate for the power I need. The cam is down the line when I actually really build the engine up if I ever get that far but right now I want the most power with bolt ons for around 1500-2000k

Re: 300hp need ideas

Cams arent nearly as expensive as the other bolt ons But with those heads it may not be worth it

Re: 300hp need ideas

I had my 91 gta w/l98 on a dyno a few years ago with a holley stealthram intake and headers and it made 252rwhp (315hp crank)with it not tuned....

not too bad then i sent pcm for less my dyno sheets with all my air fuel ratios and the motor pulls smooth up to 5200 rpms now. But this intake should have a bigger cam to match . But my point is my stock motor still increased hp. Love the HSR!

for 2k HRS, cam, 24lbs injector, heads might put you over your budget a bit. Stealram.com has some mild to wild setups to give u an idea what combos make different power. But its no TGO lol. good luck!

I have an L98. Stock compression, Trick Flow G1 heads, Miniram, 30lb injectors, .498 .502 lift 218 220 duration 114lsa cam, SLP 1 3/4" headers and a real good tune, and im making 352hp 356tq at the wheels.

I would put a cam in but I cant do it and I dont want to spend my budget at a mechanic which will wipe my money out.

Re: 300hp need ideas

just do an intake swap to a HSR or similar short runner intake, get headers and give it 2 more degrees timing and see where that gets you
