Starting an engine
Starting an engine
I have a '88 L03 that engine hasn't been started for few years. I was wondering what I should do before attempting to start it up such that I won't cause any damage to it. Like the cylinder, what kind of cleaner I can I put into it so I won't tear up the cylinder, or anything like that.
So far I have:
* Changed engine oil
* Changed Gas
Anything specific you'd recommend doing before starting it up?

Re: Starting an engine
If the engine hasn't been started in over 3 years you may want to:
Pull the sparkplugs.
Use one of THESE and put about 5 squirts of engine oil in each hole.
Crank the engine for 10 seconds.
Clean up mess.
Put plugs back in and make some smoke.

Re: Starting an engine
you may want to pull the distributor and drop a drive tool down into it on a drill and pump some oil through it for a bit before starting it, if anything pull spark plugs and drop some pbblaster down in the holes or oil to lubricate the rings and help the piston get to moving.
also you may want to turn it over by hand a couple of times on the harmonic balancer to make sure nothing is torn up or locked up.
