goofy cam swap question
Right now my 305 has the peanut cam, since it was originally an auto car. It makes no power up high, but the car will get loose in first and second in the low to midrange. I like this. I've got a stock lt1 cam. If I put it in will I lose the fun of getting sideways around in first and second since the power will come on later?
Best guess is good enough.

Re: goofy cam swap question
Thats a good question cause I'm going to put the cam from my 97 LT1 in my 305TBI. The LT1 had a LOT of grunt on the bottom but then again,it's a 350. And the cam is designed for a 350. I'm going to try it anyway.

Re: goofy cam swap question
I'd bet serious cash you'll lose the fun traction problem in second.
----------
This can be compensated with 3.73:1 gears. Those TBI 305s have crappy, no-flowing swirl-port heads, so they need replaced.

Why are they called swirl port heads? What is it about them that is so bad? What size valves are in them?

Re: goofy cam swap question
there is a ramp in the bowl of the intake port to promote fuel atomization, the ramp lowers port volume and increases turbulance which lowers flow, I'll try to get a picture of one for you.

Thats ok,I read up on them online. I would still think these heads with bigger valves and some clean up would be better than the same heads are stock. Good 305 heads seem to be hard to find in my area.

Re: goofy cam swap question
if you get swirl ports you could try to grind the ramp out of them. that would probably make a huge improvement in airflow and top end power.

I've tried that, you'll break through into the water jacket. These also don't respond to mild porting, 5 angle valve jobs with swirl-polished, undercut stainless valves, or anything else. At the time, I had access to a new SuperFlow 1020 flowbench. These heads are junk.

Re: goofy cam swap question
I was looking at the intake ports and the turn in them right at the front. I thought,"Hey,I can smooth that bend out of there...". Then I noticed the very thin wall casting and there was no room to remove the bend without making a hole and ruining the head. They probably are lo-perf heads indeed. I'm not going to do anything to my car until spring so maybe I'll find something better by then.
