Car wont start 91 Camaro RS??
Car wont start 91 Camaro RS??
I drove my car yesterday and everything was fine with it, went to work, then the barber shop and back home. I parked my car in the drive way for the night. I went out started it, move it to reverse it into the drive way. About an 1 1/2 hours later i went out to got to the grocery store and it wouldnt start,... its wont turn over at all. There was no response except for the dash notifications. Lights come on so i know its probaly not the battery. There are no clicks only the intial click as i turn the key. What could this be???

Check to make sure your battery is fully charged.
Check to make sure your battery cables are good.
Check to make sure you have power to the starter, on the main power cable, and the small wire, when the key is turned to start.
If all that is good, then you need a starter.

Double check that you are in park or neutral (If automatic) or that the clutch is in (If manual). Could be the VATS. Could be the park/neutral or clutch switch. Could be the starter relay (Behind driver's side kick panel). Could be the ignition switch.
I would start there. Any trouble codes?

Mine did the same thing,it was the VATS,used resistors to bypass. It will kill starter and fuel pump, do you hear pump start?

I'm just curious about you guys but my 1990 camaro rs 305 tbi doesn't need to have the clutch engaged to start it, it can just be in neutral with the clutch out and it will start, this is normal right?

The previous owner had some aftermarket alarm security system put in. Maybe it is part of that. It's kinda a pain when you are troubleshooting things to have to climb all the way in the car to start it.

in this order:
check in neutral for automatic. Clutch is fully dpressed for standard.
For manual, make sure the clutch pedal is depressing the clutch safety switch
check battery
check battery cables
check starter connections
cant imagine anything else being the problem.

Re: Car wont start 91 Camaro RS??
yeah, I have actually had a similar problem with mine, It would do the same exact thing as you describe, the problem stopped though, I'm pretty sure it was the alarm the previous owner installed on the car, you should disconnect that if you can. What I did to fix it was just keep messing with the positive battery connector and it would start, the time of messing with it would vary, it would only take like one wiggle of the cable and then I would turn the key and it would start, however other times I would be alternating between wiggling it and starting it for over twenty minutes.
Re: Car wont start 91 Camaro RS??
I purchased a 91 RS Camaro 305 V8 TBI that caught fire and burnt wiring harness under hood. Have replaced complete wiring harness and all other components under hood that were damaged due to fire by using parts from other 91 camaros. The camaro I purchased was sold without a "chipped key". I have tried another ignition with a chipped key but car still will not turn over or start. I need information on what has to be done in order to bypass the chipped key security to make car turn over and run. Please help with any information or location of components needed to resolve the problem. As I am not very familiar with the 91 camaro and their security systems, all I know is I have everything new in it to run but just need the technology to start it. So does anyone have any input? Please Help!!

The VATS computer provides ground to the starter enable relay. You can simply use a jumper wire on this relay, rewire it without the relay, push button start it, or whatever you can imagine. I recommend that you invest in a Haynes manual for the wiring diagram.

Re: Car wont start 91 Camaro RS??
Freem110, test the VATS start enable relay by jumping the two large yellow wires with a paper clip. With these wires jumped, the starter should crank with the key. If this is the case, then you have a VATS issue. It may well be the contacts in key cylinder. You can try working the key in and out to clean them. Some timies they stick and need to be wiggled loose. If you choose to bypass the VATS system, I do not recommend using resistors. This only bypasses the switch portion of the system and not the module itself. The modules do fail and you will still have problems. To bypass the module you need a "VATS bypass module". They sell for about $25 online and provide the fuel enable signal to the ECM, replacing the VATS module. You will need to bypass the relay by installing a permanent jumper around it.

Re: Car wont start 91 Camaro RS??
randy91rs, The circuits from the dist to the ecm, and all fuel injection circuits are in the ECM harness which runs from the engine bay to the ECM through a bulk head just in front of the passenger door. This harness is one peice and does not seperate at the bulkhead, unlike the main vehicle harness that is below the brake booster. The circuit that carries the crank referrence signal from the dist to the ECM is a purple wire with white tracer(ppl/wht). Be sure also that the ICU ground is solid and that its getting good power through the pink wire from the ignition coil. I assume you have good wiring diagrams to follow.
