Car wont turn over (something with ignition) I need HELP!

I went to start my car up on a early morning, and the car won't turn over, but all the lights on the dash are on, cd player working great as it suppose to.

But the car wont turn on?
I checked the battery cables, they were loose, I tightened them up, and still wont turn over, I checked the clutch safety switch, and it works fine,
I checked the starter, working fine, me and my dad can jump the starter and it will start up just fine, but we cant turn it over by the key.

I dont think it has to do with the anti theft locking, because if it was locking up, would it put the car on lock down for so many hours? happened to my friend, but he lost the key to the car, and was trying to make it work with a ragular key instead of a key with a chip in it.

We checked the main power wire that goes to the ignition, (purple wire?) we followed the purple wire from the battery to inside the car, to the back of the car, and back to the front of the car again and lost it somewhere up more into the dash.

We dont think the ignition switch is getting any power, but we dont know that for sure.

Any suggestions??

if any one needs more information about this problem, ask away.

(and btw, my fan isnt running, the fan was wired to as soon you turn the key on, the fan runs all the time until the car is turned off, because if I didnt have it on for 10 minutes, it starts to over heat. and now it isnt running at all. even when I try turing on the air conditioning.)

when you turn the key all the way ahead as if trying to start the car do all the lights and radio and stuff turn off? if not i would probably think the ignition is gone

Re: Car wont turn over (something with ignition) I need HELP!

We checked all the fuses, they were all good, I don't know if we checked the ign relay, but I'll check it tomorrow.

When we turn over the key, all the lights and the radio does turn off as I was trying to turn the car on, every time.

When I came in and started this topic, and I went back out in the shop, he had a wire coming direct off the battery to the neutral safety switch, basically hot wiring the car, he sticked the hot wire in the neutral safety switch and turned the key over, but not cranking it, and he pressed the button on the neutral safety switch and it fired up. but it still doesn't turn over as we turn the key all the way.

and I'm confused as the fan kicked on as he hot wired the car, the fan turns on as he got the car going. (but the fan runs when the car is running, all the time.)

I'm not sure why it didn't turn on when we jumped the starter and had to car running. but we're gonna run the fan to be on all the time as when the car running, like it was doing before. (strangely, I need that fan running all the time, if not, it starts to heat up real quickly.)

EDIT: I didn't remember if we checked the ign relays, and I don't think my dad remember either. but we're sure we didn't, do you know where their located at? I do have a repair manual for this car, but the wiring diagram wont tell us where it would be at.

there is a fuseable link down by the starter on some GM vehicals, sucks when they blow cause they're hard to se and a pain to replace, horn lights and other stuff will still work, but not the starter.

Goodluck-

hmmm...
I might have to look around for that, but I dont think I've seen anything like that.
if we dont find a way to get it to work, I might just wire a push button starter hidden somewhere in the car. but still with the key, because I got the chip in it (I so hate the chip.) at least I can get around doing that.

rig the horn for your pushbutton starter!

the fuseable link I'm refering too is just a peice of thick wire, if it's burntout, the wire will be sepperated

Re: Car wont turn over (something with ignition) I need HELP!

Hey, I'm sorry to revive an old thread but I am having the same problem, well I have no idea how to hotwire the car, so I can assume I'm having the same problem. Was there any official conclusion here? Meaning were you able to fix it without hotwiring it? Or is it possible you could detail what you did to hotwire it a little more so I can get my car started? Whats a nuetral safety switch? Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Car wont turn over (something with ignition) I need HELP!

One thing i did see was smoke under the dash when i started the car and when i turned it off it slowly stopped smoking. i checked fuses and everything seemed fine so i tried starting it and nothing at all. so thats why i am mentioning it could be the ign starter switch.
