GMPP Crate Engine check list
Hi all. I've got a zz383 sitting in its crate waiting to go into my '83 camaro and was wondering what is done to these engines before they are shipped? Does GM actually run-test them? .
What sensible things do I need to do before first starting it?
What do I need to consider in terms of a 'break-in' period?
Thanks,
Jon

Re: GMPP Crate Engine check list
You don't need to do much. Remember to prime the oiling system before you turn the key the first time- dry starts are very bad.
It's a roller cam motor so there is no cam break-in period.
I always change the oil/filter very soon after firing it up the first time. There's always some dirt & debris in a fresh built motor and you want to get that OUT of the motor quickly. I often do it with less than an hour of run time on a fresh engine.
I avoid WOT and very high RPMs for about the first 100 miles (not babying it, just not wringing it out all the way) then I let 'er eat after that.
