Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

i have a 1990 camaro rs 305 TBI and its not running right i think it has alot to do with either a sensor or the fuel injectors in the throttle body my buddy has an intake manifold and a 4 barrel carb off his camaro 350 motor...should i take his intake and carb and swap out my tbi???

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

If you can ... stick with the fuel injection. Fuel injection is much better than carburation. Faster starts in hot or cold climate, better fuel economy, better response. I suggest you figure out what the problem is and keep running your tbi. It s much beter than a carb.

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

all righty then i think i have a mass air flow sensor that has gone bad that the only thing i can think of its bogging when i put it in the floor and its lacking alot of hp that you can feel should be there....and ive already adjusted the timing, replaced the 02 sensors, and replaced the throttle posistioning sensor

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

seems like you are investing time and money into your car which i love to see. Think about what i said thou, the mods plus the TBI is pretty simple to rebuild, you could have a new TBI unit basicaly in a few hours of work and a little bit of cash, plus the link i gave you, the guy makes all this stuff for our car as a hobby, it's his way of giving back to TGO. He won't charge you an arm/leg like your local parts store for the gaskets, o rings and such.

If you put that carb/manifold on your car you will have to invest some time and money anyways to do the swap.

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

It won't fit without an adapter. I've had a tbi car, and I recently swapped a cc carb for a non cc carb, which is basically just like converting from tbi to carb. I recommend you stay fuel injected unless there is a major reason to change. It's less work, and you get equal prformance with better gas mileage and cold starts, etc.

Plus, you're emissions legal, in case that ever comes up. Good luck with your project!

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

If you gotta pickapart near you then you can get a good 350 for a couple hundren bucks, If your gonna stick with the 305 then I personally would change the TBI. They'r complicated and a pain to diagnose problems. It's true you will lose gas mileage, but they are so much easier to live with. And problems are much easier to figure out. Thats my two cents, but I admit I know little about ECMs and fuel injection, so carbs are much easier for me.

I have to completely disagree with this one. IMO diagnosing issues with tbi is very easy to find provided that you have atleast alittle knowledge of the system. You only have nine sensors to really work with (MAT,MAP,IAC,TPS,O2,EGR,KNOCK,CTS,IGN MOD) plus this site is a godsend for help. If something happens to a carb it can be a bitch to diag due to the many mechnical parts in the carb itself that can fail. You wouldn't catch me dead owning another carbed car after having my TBI. This is my opinion.

So getting to the situation at hand, you say your car is bogging down? Have you done a tune up? I would try alittle seafoam to see if it clears anything up. Do that before a tune up if you haven't already.

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

i heard seafoam is really bad for older cars, and i think i have found my problem had my bud look at it and we found that one of my injectors is a POS....lol which i told my mechanic this before i replaced anything and $200 later and no injector and im still bogging...so looks like i am a better mechanic but im getting a new throttle body of a junk camaro thats in my buds shop for $20 and everything works sooo we will see how that goes but for now i have to replace the starter should be fun!

Did seafoam on mine a week ago, nice improvement in MPG, throttle response, cleaner engine, and a smoother idle, not bad for 20$ "2 cans"

Not true. i took the throttle body injection out of my car and installed a carb setup. the car use to turn over a couple times before it would fire. with the carb i pump it 3 times cold, then once hot and with a 1/4 rotation or less the engine fires. Not throttle body injected engine has ever done that for me. since changing my car has more *****...89 camaro rs

Re: Should i Swap TBI for Carb?

Seafoam made a big difference in my car. You should put some straight in the throttle body slowly. It cleared allot out for me. Have someone in the car to keep it running while you pour it in. Dont let the exaust smoke scare you that means its working
