Motor Mount Issues
I'm replacing the motor in an '84 Z28. When I pulled the old motor out, I noticed the old motor mounts needed to be replaced so I changed them.
While trying to put the new engine in, i found that the motor wont sit down on the mounts. I can get one or the other on and bolted in, but whichever side I did get, the other side wont sit down all the way on the mount. I know the upper mounts work because I sat them on the new mounts before I put them in the car.
I made VERY sure to put the new mounts on exactly the same way as the old ones, I even took before pics just to be sure. I lined the mounts up in exactly the same place, and made sure the odd shaped corner of the mount was facing down toward the rear of the car, just like the old ones.
The auto shop where I bought the mounts said the mounts were the same for left and right, and they appear to be exactly like the old ones.
I have never had this kind of trouble with motor mounts in the other 100 or so engines I've replaced. Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

First guess is you have the inserts in the clamshell backwards.
If you have pics, post them.

Can you tell where it's hanging up? Sometimes they take some persuasion, especially with urethane mounts.

Re: Motor Mount Issues
Right now its hanging up on the drivers side mount. I have the passenger side down. It looks like its catching the insert on the back side of the upper mount.
I just took the upper mount off and bolted it to the lower mount. When I lowered the engine it doesnt even come close to matching up with the bolt holes on the upper mount. I guess I'm just going to take them back off and start over. I'm out of ideas

Bring it down so the mounts come down equally. As stated, sometimes some wiggling is required.

Re: Motor Mount Issues
Do you have somebody underneath as you boom down? We just went through a similiar situation. Make sure they seat equally, I adjusted my chain till things were equal, Long screwdriver/drift pin and rap on the mounts underneath with a hammer. Also, adjust/ loosen your trans mount as well to give you some room to maneuver. Lastly, if all else fails, grab your vernier calipers and measure the heck out of everything - they might be a little funky. Sounds like your dropping it in solo.
I got lucky with a beautiful wife who is a great mechanic and it makes all the difference having another set of eyes when we bolt it all back together.
Why is it they always come apart so much easier than they go together???!!!!

Its just me trying to get it in. I think thats half the problem. I was just looking at it and it seems like the back of the engine might need to come up some. Im about to loosen the trans mount and give it another try.
