engine question.....

hey guys. its been awhile since i've been on here. been beat down by the damn crossfire injection that went out on my car 5 days after i bought it.

but...im back, we have the crossfire bs off, have a carb intake on it now, with a holley 4150. hoping to get it all hooked up when i get back from my bands next tour in early feb.

anyway.....my question is...
is it possible that my cfi has a 350? i know the vettes came like that, and the lady that bought the car originally worked for GM and apparentley special ordered the car.

the things that make me believe this are one: the 165mph speedo, and 2: double hump heads.

your thoughts?

No crossfire came with a 350 in a fbody. No special orders, nada. 87 was the first year for a 350. No thirdgen came with double hump heads. Are you sure thats whats on it? If so, how? get a casting number.

im just going by what my mechanic said. i dont even know what that means honestly. but he was refering to 2 little tabs underneath the valve covers on the block it self. ill try and get the cast number. gonna be hard seeing as its in the car right now. where exactly is it located?

Re: engine question.....

The engine block casting is on the rear of the engine, just above the bellhousing. Driver side.

To get the cyl. head casting number, you're going to have to remove a valve cover and look down between the rockers, like this (might not be this particular casting number). The casting number is the number that ends in 187.

Re: engine question.....

Thats what the front of a double hump head would look like. More than likely thats not what is on it if it has all of the factory accesories, etc. I would guess if its the original engine it still has the factory stuff.

how do you know they are dump hump head? are there accesory holes in them?

assuming what you said is correct i would say its not the original engine. I would really hope no one is dumb enough to waste double humps on a 305.

i guess that its a 350 and someone just liked the crossfire injection.

the only way to tell though is how others have said. Casting Numbers !

Re: engine question.....

alright. i think my question is answered. the only number i could get to was on the drivers side...and all it says is 'GM5.0LG" which im assuming is a 5.0...which in 90% of cases is a 305.

the heads had 14014416 and k112 stamped on them.

maybe the block can hold double hump heads? what does that even mean. sorry, im new to this level of mechanics. i can rock a stereo...but this stuff is so new.

i appreciate all yalls help!

Re: engine question.....

Nope, no "double hump" heads there. 416 is the correct casting # for a stock 305 cylinder head on your year of car. The casting mark on the older 305 heads looks kinda similar to the "double hump", or "camel-back" casting mark, but it's not the same. The 305 mark I'm thinking of basically looks like the letter "U" with a raised, squared off tip on each side. Sounds like you got the bone stock, original 305 motor in your car after all.

Re: engine question.....

Even though most guys avoid the CFI units like the plague, there is a small, niche market for them. You might have some luck if you put it up for auction on fleabay. My dad used to own an 82 collector's edition Vette, and he bought a couple of extra CFI setups just to have as spares.
