I get to have fun...... Help please!!! Fuel filter/Pump
Well today I pulled my car out of the garage to finish putting my vert top on and the battery was dead. So I rolled it down my hill to pop the clutch (Manual) and it didn't work. I thought it was weird cause I have done it many times with out failure (You can get 3-4 tries in on my drive way, it's pretty steep and long). So I pulled the Durango around and tried to jump it. Still nothing. I put a little gas in the TBI and it started and died instantly. I then added 5 gallons of gas thinking maybe my gas guage went bad and tried this about 4-5 more times and by then it was dark already. So, I was not sure where the fuel filter is so I did a search and found it. Tomorrow I will change the fuel filter.
Now, if the fuel filter is fine, which I hope it isn't, what kind of fuel pump should I get? I would like a performance one but not a 200 dollar one. Catch my drift? Just to give me a little more power. Doesn't matter if its 1 HP or 10 HP. Also is there a guide to dropping the tank to get to the fuel pump? I was looking 5 minutes ago and it looks as if I have to drop the differential..... I guess that'll be a first!!!!
Geez I must have bad luck. I just turned 17 last week and I have already done a full top end rebuild, exhaust and convertible top. Now I get to rebuild the tranny in my 91 and maybe the fuel pump in my 89. What fun!!!
Also to add before all this happened it took some cranking to get it fired up. I would crank for about 5-6 seconds and then when I cranked it again it would fire up after 2-3 seconds. Are these some clues to a fuel pump going bad?
Thanks,
Justin

Re: I get to have fun...... Help please!!! Fuel filter/Pump
I dont know. I have the same crap with my 89 so I want to get in here. If you dont mind. Mine starts & runs. Been sitting for most of the last two years. It ran out of gas one day. When I put some in it, it was very hard to start. It started fine for all of the driving I did the next Sat. On Sun. about 75% of the time I would start it, then it would shut off after about 3 seconds. The only way I could get it to run after that is to pump the gas. After I got the motor to "clean out" it was fine. Is this a normal thing too? Any advise for changing the fuel pumps? I want to cut a whole in the floor so bad lol.

I can actually answer this for you. If you think about it the car is about 20 years old (Just realized I can file for antique on my camaro!!!). After all that time dirt particles and other mystery objects gets into the tank. So when you drive it to the empty, such as running out, the gas is mixed with particles of dirt and such and gets sucked into the fuel filter therefor clogging it. So with that being said, just clean the fuel filter and you will be good.

Installing a better-than-stock pump won't get you any form of horsepower. In the end, the pressure regulator will still choke the fuel supply down to whatever pressure it's set at. If the engine is stock, get a stock replacement.
Are you saying that if you sit there and crank and crank, it will eventually fire and run? If so, sounds like the fuel pump is fine, but the fuel pump relay is shot.

On the ALDL under the dash, put a 12v power source to the "G" terminal. That's the bottom left:

That will directly power the fuel pump, bypassing the relay and whatnot. If the pump powers up, you have a problem with the relay or relay fuse. If you do not hear the pump run with 12v on the terminal, chances are dead pump.

I am not all that good with electricity so I was wondering if I could use a battery charger to use as a power source. I can do 12v 4 Amp or 12v 6 amp. Could I use it or should I wait for my new battery?
