M.A.F. troublecode

So i get some error code about my MAF on my 85 iroc-z tpi. It runs great, starts great, idles great, drives fine, but if i sit at a stop light for a long period of time BAM. I get the service light on and it starts to idle poorly? It's of the Hot wire type. Is this a fake MAF problem and its something more like vacuum or is it real? The way it occurs just seems odd to me.

Part 2: I haven't deduced if this problem is related or not but I'll mention it just because. Sometimes when i give it hell it doesn't shift it revs out real hard and i have to let off a bit for it and then it kicks real hard. Quite scary and annoying. I was first told this could be a vacuum issue, then i was informed there is no vacuum on my tranny. I was told a reprogram shift kit should fix it if its a sticking TV plunger.
