pushrod questions
hi guys, 87 305 with the hyd roller cam. im lookin to run a streetable cam decent gas milage. daily driver type set up. my question is i have an older set of heads of a 305 from like 84 i think it is. they are good shape and was told they would be a better head than wat i have. my question is if i was to put those heads onto the new style block and run a aft. hyd roller cam would i have to buy a "certian length push rod to compensate for the different type head? anyone ever run into new old head swaps. is it possibLE? thanks..

Re: pushrod questions
You would more than likely be able to keep the pushrods you have now.. Installing one and going through the length checking process would not be a bad idea, though. Just to be 110% certain.

The only difference between '87 and '84 heads are the valve cover bolts and the angle of the center two intake mount bolts. The ports, valves, and chambers are the same.
The only thing you'd gain with the heads change is a wider choice of aftermarket intake manifolds and valve covers.

Re: pushrod questions
really? well thats good to know info. i jus bought a length checker to have anyways for future use. i was jus thinkin the chamber might have been a lil different or maybe the runners. if i was to use a cam wit anything over .475 lift and use 1.6 rockers i would have to have the heads preped for that along with the springs and retainers as well correct?

Re: pushrod questions
Correct, guide bosses would have to get cut down. Depending on what springs you would end up with, may or may not cut out the spring pockets. And yes, always suggested to upgrade the springs/retainers when putting in a new cam.
