Help determining shortblock problem HELP!

Hi guys, So i finally bit the bullet and pulled my 40,000 junkyard motor back out of my car. I could hear air leaking internally somewhere and figured it was a head gasket or bad piston or block crack? The oil smells like gas and it was blowing oil out of the dipstick before removal. I took the heads off and didn't see any obvious head gasket leak, all pistons and cylinders look good, i gave the block a thorough check for cracks and found nothing. At this point i was going to get new gaskets and put the motor back together and do a compression and leakdown test out of the car. I am trying to use this motor and hopefully new gaskets will do it. Does anyone have any suggestions if i put it back together and it's still leaking down before i just opt to buy a crate motor? Thanks and help would be greatly appreciated, i have like 15,000 into the resto on this non running car!

If you already have it torn down to the bare block. Take it to a machine shop to have them hot tank and magnaflux it. Cost $40 for the tank and quick check at my local shop. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to have the heads done $30 for tank/mag on them.

I'd rather spend the little bit of money to know my block/heads are good, rather than build it and potentialy have it leak again.
