17 bolts per head, then pry up from the intake side of the head. Wrap a rag around a prybar and put it into one of the intake ports.
Re: need help- heads will not pry off?
well I have removed 8 bolts on the outside of each head, and 9 bolts on the inside of the head. I have not been able to pry them off. I have search for more bolts to no avail. I have beat the hell out of it with a rubber mallet. Next I am about to try a real hammer. I am so frustrated. They will not simply pry off.
Any other ideas?

Where are you prying them from? I usually just put the handle of a breaker bar into an intake port and pry upwards (gently)

Re: need help- heads will not pry off?
I ran into that once during my first rebuild. The heads had been on for about 170k miles. It took a large rounded tip flat head screw driver and a RUBBER mallet. A very dangerous approach but even a prybar crowbar and a 20lbs x 6ft steel bar would not seperate those things. The gasket had baked in there pretty good.
I had to get an old very large flat head screw driver to seperate em. I ground the edges down pretty smooth so there were no corners. That way I didnt run as high a risk to scratching the gasket surface. If you come in from the intake side at the front seal where there is a very tiny overlap from the head to the front oil seal surface of the intake and start tapping GENTLY directly in line with the head gasket it will begin to seperate. Once you have broken the seal use a prybar to finish the job.
I can not stress enough how bad an idea this is but if ALL else fails it works.

Did you remove the push rods? If not, do that first. Then do the screwdriver method and you can use the upper corners of the head by the water ports. It's worked for me several times.

And.. if that fails, use dynamite. Half a stick should do. Seriously, if all else fails, I agree with these guys. Use a screwdriver.

Try not to break off the dowel pins that are at the bottom ends of each head. If you do too much beating on them from the side or tip them too far you could break them off.
I've used the screwdriver method a few times. Put it between the block and head near the water ports and tap away at the gasket and it should break loose.

I always stick a pry bar into the exhaust crossover and pull up. Always breaks them free.
