ignition box getting WAY to hott...

i have it mounted on the firewall where the a/c and heater box was. its getting so hott its making the car miss and sputter and wanting to always shut down. anybody else hear of anything like this? also wheres a decent place ot put it now? i was thinking under the dash where the heater core was, and run wires out the heater core holes. (no heater) would it get hott under there or would i be ok?

Re: ignition box getting WAY to hott...

A few things one are you sure that its getting too hot because of where its located? That particular area is under the hood yea but it souldnt really be getting that hot. I wonder if its not a problem with the electronics. Next are you sure that its missing and sputtering because the box is too hot? If you mounted it inside the car as sugested it should be about as cool as it gets.

ya im thinking its due to the heat because its maybe 15-20 inches from headers and stuff so im thinking its the heat. second i never had it miss before when its cool or with the stock engine. it starts sputtering and stuff right when the box gets hott. dunno what else to check for the missing. replaced cap, coil, rotor, and plug wires, plugs. still missing only at an idel and reeving to 2500 rpm

Re: ignition box getting WAY to hott...

Do you have headers if so, that area does get hot, in other vehicles it's a common area for issues like burnt ac/heater housings and faulty electronics. Move the box inside the car if possible.

The factory does heat mapping in an engine bay to strategically place components, putting headers on an engine completely changes that. A good example is the mopar ignition amplifiers, those thigns are mounted in a similar location on the firewall and with headers they crap out all the time.

Re: ignition box getting WAY to hott...

Are you sure it's the box that's making it flakey? The switching transistors in those boxes usually work until they short (and then don't come back).

Re: ignition box getting WAY to hott...

the box gets hott under the hood, and yes i do got headers so im baking the box basically. im gna put it in the car, probably inside the dash where heater core goes, dunno yet. Im leaning toward the box being hott with the missing, but i am not positive. what else could cause the missing like that? its not missing at an idle only reeving at 2500rpm
