Sporadic Oil Pressure

Hello all, this is my first third gen ever and I'm used to working on older cars so I'll probably need ya a lot. I've got a 1990 Firebird Formula and among it's several problems the oil pressure is very sporadic (according to the gauge anyway). I know it needs a serpentine belt and either the alternator or P/S pump is squeaking. Anyway, the oil psi is on the higher side of the guage and its pretty much constantly jumping 5-10 psi. I'm only 15 so my knowledge is severely limited and I haven't a clue what it could be. If anybody has any tips as to what it could be I would greatly apreciate it.
Thanks
Alex

Re: Sporadic Oil Pressure

I think you have a sporadic ground for the gauge.

Re: Sporadic Oil Pressure

it seems G.M.s oil press. sensor is not the most reliable . it's located above oil filter . not too bad to replace , be careful with old brittle plastic on connector . bad sensor is the cause of most oil press. indicator problems . good luck .

Re: Sporadic Oil Pressure

Yes, it can be the sender, located behind the intake manifold, on the driver's side.

Re: Sporadic Oil Pressure

Is this sensor above the oil level after the car is off and sat for a bit? Or is oil going to pour out?
