Re: Vacumn Advance????

It shouldnt really effect the idle if im not mistaken. The vacuum on the vacuum advance port should be 0 or very close to it at idle and build as the RPM increases.

Re: Vacumn Advance????

we replaced a computer controlled carburetor and distributer with a holly 600 and a vacumn controlled distributer. With timing set at 8 degrees, car idles fast, if we adjust the timing to where engine idles normally then performance is bad. any help on this?

Re: Vacumn Advance????

if you replaced the dist with a non-cc model than you will need more base timing than that as the computer was adding timing at idle

Re: Vacumn Advance????

Well for starters ide say set your timing to say 10 degrees next ide take a look at tuning that carb because i think thats more your problem. Theres idle mixture screws idle speed adjustments. Check for vacuume leaks. You can fiddle with the timing to make it run poor enought to make the idle drop to its correct value but like you said that will yeild bad performance.

Re: Vacumn Advance????

im not the best person when it comes to cars. but what do you mean? Do you mean i should set it as 10 or 12 degrees? because the higher i set it the higher the idle and if i set the timing the other way then it will idle better but will perform worse on the road.

Yea i would first set the timing to 10-12 degrees and then tune the carb. The idle speed is then set with adjustments on the carb.

well we had the same problem with a non cc quad and the holley is brand new and we just put it on today..... so maybe it is the idle mixture screws? ill give it a try. are they suspose to be pre-set from factory?

Re: Vacumn Advance????

well when i tried to start the car this morning....it didnt start at all. I noticed that the distributer was way out of place.....i noticed that the bolt that holds it in place, was not holding it and everytime i tried to start it, the distributer would move out of place. wtf?????.....well i fixed the bolt and finally got it to start and set the timing at 10 degress and adjusted the idle mixture screws and it sounded good.....so i took it down the road for a test run, the car sounded and felt great but it died several seconds down the road and now it wont start for nothing. What could possibly be the problem?
